re: Mike Bianchi: Bobby Bowden better than both Nick Saban and Bear Bryant

Except that he couldn't beat Bear Bryant no matter how long he had to prepare. Neither Paterno or Ohio State's greatest ever Woody Hayes could beat Bryant. Paterno was 0-4 against the Bear.

If the BCS still existed, Saban would probably have another title assuming Alabama would've beat FSU last season.

Saban, Bowden and Bryant were great but I think today teams are more even across the board. With every team being on national tv, having deals with nike/under armour/Adidas/etc many programs have the funds to compete, when Bryant and Bowden were at their pinnacle they did not have as much competition imo. Also, I think the extra games they play now gives teams more opportunities to come out flat and lose, CFB basically has 15 games and could soon move to 16, more games played = more chances to lose. Plus every team still plays in conference, schedules one power team from another top conference, with 3 cupcakes, then the bowl game or playoffs.

You really have to go back and see where Bowden started from at FSU. I went back and watched some old FSU games recently and even having a pretty decent knowledge of how he built FSU, I was floored by the way he did it.
You talk about the SEC, he played as many of them as he could in the seventies, eighties, and early nineties, usually on the road. Signed two-for-one, and three-for-one home and home series with almost any powerhouse that would do it. It was almost a barnstormers mentality, taking his fledgling program to fight anyone, anywhere. He played both of the major Florida schools every year, something neither of those two teams in that three-way can say. He took a program with little to no football success and made it into a premier powerhouse for two decades. FSU could have had a few more National championships... especially if the format was BCS/Final Four. They were almost always one of the top four teams in America at bowl time.
It is truly an amazing rise to power, and an unconventional route.

Spurrier > Bowden
Saban > Spurrier
Saban > Spurrier

quote:no, Saban is better than both...Nick has 5 legit titles...Bobby Bowden and Bear Bryant only have one legit title. And the Bear won all his games with no scholarship limits.
Bobby Bowden better than both Nick Saban and Bear Bryant
Do you agree?

Paterno himself said he was no match for Bear, in his autobiography

quote:He got to compete in each of those years. He came up short with one loss and less impressive wins than other schools who were chosen to play for the championships. How many close games did FSU play in the ACC during those 13 years with top 4 finishes? What sort of success were other members of the ACC having? If FSU lost to either Florida or Miami should they have been national champions if they weren't clearly the best team in Florida?
Bowden had 5 one loss seasons in which he didn't get the opportunity to compete for the title....

if he's going that route, he might as well throw in howard schnellenberger too. miami was less than nothing, then for 20 years, they were the team to beat. sure, they don't have but a handful of titles in comparison to ND, USC, UA, etc. but that guy built a fricking program.
And started the program at FAU.
Schnellenberger is definitely in the discussion using the OP articles parameters.
And you have to take into account Fake Howard Schnellenberger who is tGOAT call in guest.

Bowden did a great job, no doubt about it. But come on, it was just a matter of time till FSU was great in college football. Way too much talent around them to not be great. Same as LSU.

Sounds like he should have been playing in a tougher conference.

Jimmy Johnson is better college coach than Saban . Jimmy recruited more hall of gamers than Saban and majority of his hall of farmers were from okie state
So you're telling me Saban won with less talent? I'll take it.

Bear Bryant was 0-3 vs. Ara Parseghian.
In fact, the Irish are 5-1 against the Tide.
Bama could not beat teams from the North and Notre Dame and ND and Michigan State and USC rightfully deserved titles over them.
Bear was 0-11-2 outside of the South in out-of-conference. He dominated a pale-face league but didn't fare too well playing against the big league...back then the SEC was considered extremely weak unlike today. The real football was considered the Midwest with black players and the West Coast.

I don't agree here... You still have to coach the players you get.. They may have gottem better but without Bowden they don't get where they were. IMO....

Also disagree... Just take a look at the ton of great talent that Miles has gotten here and look at his season to season records against say Bowdens FSU teams... You still have to coach and develop players once they get to your school... Saban is BY FAR the best at doing this at this time.. We may NEVER see such a thing that Saban is doing now ever again... Its simply amazing....

As much as it pains me, I was coming here to post this.

Here's what I get out of this:
1. I had no idea who Mike Bianchi is
2. Mike Bianchi trolled Roll Tide Nation
3. Mike Bianchi is now famous
4. His webpage is getting a bunch of hate clicks
Mission accomplished.

So Ohio State and Penn State aren't teams from the North? And I'm pretty sure he won games against USC in Los Angeles in 1971 and 1977. He also won one or two games over Penn State in Happy Valley.
He also went up into Maryland to defeat a Top 15 Terps squad in '74. Defeated Mizzou and Washington at their home stadiums in '78. And went to New York to play and defeat Rutgers in 1980.
So, yeah...you might want to check that 0-11-2 stat you pulled out of your arse concerning games played outside the South against non-conference opponents.
