if he's going that route, he might as well throw in howard schnellenberger too. miami was less than nothing, then for 20 years, they were the team to beat. sure, they don't have but a handful of titles in comparison to ND, USC, UA, etc. but that guy built a fricking program.

People keep saying 5 championships but what does that mean? That has a lot to do with luck and very little to do with individual accomplishment. Every time Saban finishes a season with 1 loss he plays for a championship. Bowden had several 1 loss seasons and rarely played for a championship.

I do think an argument could be made. Didn't they have something like 13 consecutive top 4 finishes at one point?

IMO,

4 titles in 7 years and 5 in 11 years >> 13 straight top 4 finishes

from 87-00 they finished in the top 5 every season. In 01 they lost more games (4) than they had since 1986. Losing Richt demolished that program and it has only recently since recovered.

How many titles would Bobby have if he got to play a championship game every year he had 1 loss? Saban has had 7 one loss seasons and played for the title in 6 of those years

Bowden had 5 one loss seasons in which he didn't get the opportunity to compete for the title....

So Bowden had one undefeated season and 6 one loss seasons

Saban has had one undefeated season and 7 one loss seasons

That is pretty comparable. Winning a title in college football used to be as much about luck and votes as talent and accomplishments

Not a valid argument. From 1992 onward his team had a chance to play for the national championship under the Bowl Coalition, the Bowl Alliance, and the Bowl Championship Series.

1987: Lost to Miami, Miami and Oklahoma both were undefeated and played for all the marbles in the Orange Bowl
1988: Lost to Miami 31-0. If anything, Miami had earned a re-match game against Notre Dame for the title
1992: Lost to Miami. Both Miami and Alabama finished undefeated and played for all the marbles in the Sugar Bowl
1993: Won the national championship
1994: Lost to Miami and tied Florida. Penn State and Nebraska finished undefeated and would have played each other if the Big Ten and the Pac 10 had participated in the Bowl Coalition
1996: Lost to Florida in the national championship
1997: Lost to Florida. Michigan and Nebraska finished undefeated and would have played each other if the Big Ten and the Pac 10 participated in the Bowl Alliance

So your answer is zero.

You completely missed the point.

A one loser season is a one loss season. Is it truly better just because you got lucky that there weren't two undefeated teams? No, it isn't. For example, Auburn went undefeated in 2004. Lsu won the championship in 2007 with 2 losses. It is clearly a better coaching job in 2004 but no title. That was my point.

While missing my point I understand why people use the national title argument, but it is lazy. Would Sabans season in 2012 be worse if Oregon doesn't lose to Stanford?

No

If it isn't an undefeated season you needed luck to make the title game. That makes you luckier not better than a coach from a season who had 1 loss and didn't make the title game

For the record I think Saban is better. I was just answering the titles argument

1988=11-1 #3
1989=10-2 #3
1990=10-2 #4
1991=11-2 #4
1992=11-1 #2
1993=12-1 #1
1994=10-1-1 #4
1995=10-2 #4
1996=11-1 #3
1997=11-1 #3
1998=11-2 #3
1999=12-0 #1
2000=11-2 #5

This is where we defer and where the difference lies between Alabama fans and everyone else.

If Saban coaches 5 more years he will have a 13 year stretch that looks like that

since 2008 his 8 year stretch had been a joke

So if Stanford misses the kick against Oregon that makes Sabans season worse because why? If you think it does then Bama fans are dumber than I thought. Yes you wouldn't be as happy with the season because you don't have a title but it changed ZERO of Sabans coaching.

Make it 6 more years and that will = the 14.

The record will not be = but the titles will be more and the top 5 finished will not be equal.....

Because we don't win the national championship. Duh. And "worse" isn't the word I would use. "Disappointing" is a more appropriate term.

I agree it would be more disappointing. But that isn't what this discussion is about. It is about coaching

If Saban had his one loss seasons in years in which two other teams go undefeated he would have been screwed in his quest for national titles . That happened four times for Bobby.

I was clearly being facetious. Although, it is QUITE obvious that richt leaving did have a major impact on the program. I mean, just look at the stats and how their games turned out. Pretty obvious.
