Company Tattoo Policies

A friend of mine got an arm tattoo with his daughters name and his employer asked him to wear sleeves from now on. He works for an engineering firm and deals with client quite a bit. He didn't seem bothered too much but I can tell it hurt him a bit.
Does anyone else work for a company with such policies? How common is this? People can change sexes over the weekend and HR makes us pretend to be ok with it but a guy can't have a tattoo on his arm?

Tattoos really shouldn't be displayed in a professional setting
Not all, but some people will draw conclusions from seeing them, whether it's right or wrong
I work with several engineering companies and most of the designers have tattoos displayed and no one seems to care though

I don't personally have a problem with tattoos but I guess some companies don't want customers to know that they employ trash.

Tattoos are trashy especially ones with your kids names ... Ole boy is lucky they didn't fire him on the spot

He deals with clients, he should look professional. End of story. Doesn't matter if the tattoo is of his daughter's name or a flaming a-hole. Visible tattoos don't look professional.

Stupid comparison, people that undergo surgery to change their sex have to cover up their new genitalia just like your buddy has to cover up his new ink.

I have no problem with this.

my company is the same...tattoos can't be visible...if you keep your tattoos covered up and long hair tucked in a shirt or something, no one will say anything...

The owner of my company told me no when I asked if he wanted me to wear long sleeves. I do however carry a long sleeved shirt in my company truck at all times because I realize that I represent my company and some people will judge me on my tattoos and not my experience or our reputation. I wear sleeves when dealing with new clients in an office setting when on a jobsite I will wear sleeves if they don't already know about my tattoos.

Just don't hide said tattoo during the interview process if you don't want to be judged on it.

Moral of the story :
Don't get fricking tatoos.

I'm so glad I didn't fall pray to the fad of tattoos. When I was in my early 20's it really exploded. I'm actually kinda surprised I didn't fall pray.

I can't wait for this older judgemental generation to die off. It's not like he has something that could be offensive unless you are a gaping vagina.

This is strange for the boss asking him to hide them. My old lady works at a strip club and she gets asked all the time to uncover hers.

This is really weird, a Tattoo-themed thread on the O-T.
It's like the first time the subject has ever come up here.
I just don't know which way to comment.

Sounds like this is in a rural area perhaps. He could probably make more money in a more modern market in a bigger city. Just comply with he employer's request and get experience needed to jump ship to a more lucrative firm.
eta: The guy does sound trashy, though.

Can you describe said friend?
I can't think of ANY worse tattoo than a name. Even your child's
Especially in a visible place.
