quote:I'm a gun-owner, and I know hundreds of gun-owners. It isn't an unhealthy obsession with guns. It's an unhealthy narcissism. Anytime somebody on the left says something about guns, narcissistic Americans knee-jerk with "So Hitler Obama wants to take my guns away? Come 'n' get 'em, baw!"
It's amazing how the comments in this thread prove him right. America has an absurd and unhealthy obession with guns.
Whenever somebody wants to reduce funding to Planned Parenthood, narcissistic Americans say "So you don't think I should choose what happens to my body?"
Whenever somebody wants to keep Massachusetts bars open past 1am, narcissistic Americans say "So you think that MY child should be killed by a drunk driver?"
It isn't an unhealthy obsession with guns. It's an unhealthy obsession with "me".

So the same violence just less gun deaths? And by less I mean it cut in half.
Didn't get rid of it like they thought it would.
Only way to rid us of gun violence is to get rid of guns on earth. Everywhere.
Good luck with that.

I agree. The problem is the gun culture in the inner cities, but we are in denial and blame it on the gun culture in rural areas, which isn't actually a problem.
Hmmm, this makes a lot of sense.

your right to own firearms privately versus what people see as a "remedy" to mass shootings.
I didn't say that concealed carry is a remedy for mass shootings. It is only a deterrent since they are rare and unpredictable events. You never see mass shooters go anywhere there are potential, legally-armed individuals or uniformed officers. The reason is simple - people don't do dumb shite if they think they'll get shot.
I think concealed carry is a great remedy for a lack of individual security - it's a great way for a person to take responsibility of his/her safety and realize cops will only be there to clean up the mess and write in a book about it. It's a great way to prevent crimes from even starting without firing a shot. It's a great way to protect your loved ones. It's a great way to stack the cards in your favor since drawing a gun is a reflexive action. The criminal chooses when the fight starts - we don't get that luxury. Of course, carrying a gun does not guarantee this but definitely increases your odds of survival in a deadly encounter.
Plus, concealed carry permit holders are the most law abiding group of people in the country, making up a statistical 0 when it comes to crimes committed per year. They could state that one fact alone and make the original article look idiotic.
This entire response isn't directed at you - I just hear the same arguments posed often.

You have an odd definition of the word "obsession." Honore, as a public figure, discusses this issue in the public arena in the wake of a recent, tragic string of mass shootings, and the posters in this thread offer up their opinions that run contrary to his. Seems like a pretty convenient strawman for you to use this as evidence of an "absurd and unhealthy" obsession.

I don't even know what that's supposed to mean.

City Mouse is 20% less likely to be killed by a gun than Country Mouse
quote:Did you not the read the article, or intentionally misinterpreting to prove a point, or are you stupid.
The risk of firearm-related death showed no difference across the rural-urban spectrum for the population as a whole
Also, and the biggest point of all, is that both you and the article ignored my qualifier "inner"
What an epic fail

The gun control/culture debate is one of my favorites. The left has lost this fight definitively. If you couldn't get it after the fear mongering that followed Sandy Hook, it's not likely to happen at all.
What is amazing is that the political class, despite repeated exhortations from the public to go frick themselves, continue to bring it up several times a year.
It's like if you told the neighbor kid that cuts your grass that you do not want him weedeating around the flowerbed for any reason, period. Then, at every opportunity, he comes back to you to talk about weedeating around the flowerbed.
Did the overwhelming majority of the public stutter, Honore? I don't remembering us asking you to pontificate about a goddamned thing...

Guns are not the problem, the issue America has that no one wants to address is with mental health. These people who commit mass shootings have mental health issues that are not being addressed by anyone. However, It goes a lot further than issues with guns, the majority of the homeless are people with mental health issues. The guy yelling at cars on the street corner isn't on drugs, he's got severe mental health issues. If you aren't born in to an affluent family and you have mental health issues, you typically become the state's problem, but the state doesn't know what to do with them, so they dump them on the street. Police pick them up from time to time and it adds to the over crowding of jails.

Google "Murder New Orleans" and take a look at the plethora of stories that pop up. When the media starts covering stories like those with the same zeal as they do what happened in Lafayette, give me a call.
Lafayette was a tragedy, no doubt. But so was the 17 year old and 4 year old shot on Boeing St last week. So were plenty on that list. There is a problem with violence in certain parts of the community. When those folks decide to start admitting there is a problem, then things will change.
In the meantime, don't worry about my guns and my lawful use of them, mmmkay?

Nope. Now you're ignoring the part about the part I said you were ignoring. So meta

I've been saying for years. Raise the price on ammunition. Raise the taxes on them to were a box of bullets costs around $10K. That way people still have their guns, hunters have ammunition and everyone is happy. If you can't afford a box that's on you.

I like how, short of "locking them in the cabinet," he identifies a problem but doesn't offer a solution.
Imagine if he'd approached Katrina the same way: "This shite is fricked up. We need to clean this up and help some folks [drops mic, walks off stage]."

I met Gen Honore back when he was a 1 star General in 1st CAV around 1997 or so. He seemed like a a politician even back then. I didn't think very highly of him to be honest.

How about you frick right off with that shitty idea?
How would people train themselves with their firearms if they can't afford more than one box of ammunition without defaulting on their mortgage?

The word hunting doesn't appear in the US Constitution.
