If you owned a restaurant, how would you handle a request for a 1/2 sized entree

“Most restaurants think I’m trying to shortchange them when I ask for half a portion,” says Camille Hugh, fitness blogger and half-entree fan.

quote:

Hugh is among a growing number of diners — Amal Clooney included — who are requesting partially portioned meals at NYC restaurants, leaving chefs divided on how to handle such demands.

While some oblige as a matter of goodwill, others are refusing to sacrifice the quality of their dishes — and won’t even split a meal on two plates for diners, because it goes against their philosophy.

I would laugh in their face?

I'd send them the full entree and a to-go box.

Seriously though, it would probably depend on the entree.

Count me as a fan of 1/2 sized entrees. Most restaurants put too damn much food on a plate--rarely can I order three courses and finish all of them...I can only manage most of two, even at fine dining places where portions are typically smaller. I love to see menus like Domenica's, which offers a variety of items in two different sizes. This seems like a reasonable way to approach the situation.

Very few foods (besides pizza) make decent leftovers. I don't want to waste food, nor do I want a takeout box at a white-tablecloth restaurant.

Give them a half sized entree' and charge them half the price of a regular entree'. What's so difficult about that?

This is stupid. Just order an appetizer, a soup, or a small salad if you don't want to eat that much. Or better yet, just stay home and not go out and be a pain in the arse

Menus are structured for full sized entrees. I'd give her 1/2 her entree if it was possible and charge her 75% of full price. She saves money and I make just as much or more money. Win/Win.

This seems odd to me. So the restaurant wouldn't give her a half portion even though she said she would pay the full price? Why not? Also, if she's willing to pay the full portion, why does she insist on getting a half portion? Either eat half and take the other half with you (which she did), or eat half and leave the other half on the plate. You paid for it, why care if it's "wasted?"

So she waited for the plate to arrive at the table and asked for 1/2. GTFO

It's one thing to ask beforehand, but there's no takebacks once the plate arrives.

She's just trying to increase her Q-rating.

If she asked for it with that bitch look on her face and her hand on her hip Id charge her double for half the dish.

If it wasn't something I offered, tough shite for the diner.

That said, I've said for a few years now I think restaurants should offer "half" and "whole" portions. I waste so much food from restaurants.

I would give them a half-sized entree for the full entree price and double my profit margin.

Since this request is nothing new, I'm willing to bet most POS systems have an "Easy Button" for such requests.

Serve them half on their plate and give them the other half in a to-go box before they pay their bill.

Seems pretty simple.

arseinclarse is not half sized anything

Arse - I know half sized goes against everything you stand for, but here are facts.

I am 6'3" 200 pounds on a former athlete frame. Unfortunately, I am an old guy and can't or shouldn't eat nearly what I could eat 10 - 20 years back.

Entrée portions are beyond my capacity to eat now. They are simply too big most of the time. The wife and I have stopped buying appetizers when we dine out (which is frequent). More and more, we order one entrée and split it. When we cook steak at home, much of the time we eat a small salad, half of a baked potato and split a NY strip. That is just fact for us.

We stopped going to all you can eat places years ago. I can no longer eat all I can eat.

I understand what the person in your OP is talking about.

What I can say is that there is no way I will pay $40.00 for an entrée and throw half of it away. So the problem now is I am hesitant to go to an expensive restaurant where I know I will throw away much of what they serve to me. I guess I need to say that I hardly ever get a doggie bag and when I do I hardly ever eat it later that day or the next.

I understand a chef has tender Chef feelings and that small half sized portions "goes against their philosophy". It is frustrating to know they don't give a shite about the desires of the people buying their food.

My 2 cents worth. I probably owe you a penny refund.
