An off-duty Douglas County Sheriff's deputy was at a park in Thornton watching a soccer tournament when his K9 escaped his car and attacked a Shih Tzu which later died.

The K-9 has been quarantined and is not working as a police dog.

The off-duty deputy was cited for "dog at large" and "animal attack."

police dogs taking up the slack for cops not getting their dog kill quota in

Dogs can't just "escape" from their handler's police unit.

I bet the dog gets treats while on administrative leave.

No shite.
I assume it's as simple as he left the window open and the dog got out that way.
This thread is pretty hilarious though, considering the OT's view on cops and dog killings. Even the dog cops want to kill dogs.

so if he was off duty watching a soccer tournament, why was his dog with him in the first place and why was he in the car? I assume the cop had the car running to keep the car heated/cooled for the dog just wasting tax payer dollars when the dog should have been at home in the first place.

Even cop dogs are killing dogs.

I am going to lay odds here that he was driving his police cruiser and had the dog in the back. Those cars have a system that auto starts the car and runs the AC when it hits a certain temp inside. They also have spring loaded back doors with a key fob button that makes the door open when it is pressed. The idea is that the officer can hit the button and release the dog if he is attacked.
They literally train the dogs to come out fighting if that door pops open so that would explain alot if the "victim" was nearby and the button got pushed accidentally while in his pocket.
Or...
He was just stupid and had the dog in the back of his personal car with the window down.
Either way, ooopppsss...

Killed a Shih Tzu? Must not have been any black dogs around.

CNN will dye the killer dog's fur pale blonde and the victim dark.

There's a joke in here about profiling, dog-on-dog crime, chinese victim, dogs diversifying the victim... but I can't get there.
Anyone?
Anyone?

Some of these responses are hilarious.
It don't understand why he had his K-9 with him unless he just got off and went directly to the game. Either way you have to be responsible as a K-9 handler

I'm betting he just got off work and was stopping by to watch his kid play. I highly doubt the K-9 was in his personal vehicle. These dogs are generally kept as a tool and very rarely are they viewed as pets by their handlers. The most likely scenario is that he hit his door release in his pocket on accident and the dog jumped out and bit the other dog. Sad situation, but the cop is more at fault than the dog.
