So alienware sucks? Better off just building your own?

Absolutely, especially for these high-end machines. They spent all this money on proprietary designs and marketing, costs which are passed onto the consumer, stuffed with reference blower-style video cards and an overkill CPU. Mis-allocated components and a premium akin to Apple when it comes to upgrades, let alone the inflated price you'll pay for even the baseline model.
Blower-style GPU coolers are loud as holy hell.
Case looks ugly IMO. The thermal design is not an improvement in traditional towers either. It's a gimmick. They're just using the new X99 chipset and DDR4 release as a reason to market a new design.
This would've been something that interested me when I was 15. Nowadays, I prefer something cleaner and more traditional, with a tried and true thermal design.
Personally, I'm fan of the case for my own build:
If you build it yourself, the case choices are near endless, and you can get as stupid as you want with the aesthetics:
No, Alienware. That's the problem. I can't forget.

That looks nice. Don't care about the touch screen unless the thing flips backwards like Ultra-book styles.
I'm just wonder if there is a huge premium on the touch screen, because at $1299 I'd hope for an option with at least a GTX 860M or 870M.
