I know it’s the OT where everyone is strong, fast, and sexy but I read a lot of the fitness/running threads where tons of people claim to run upwards of 40 miles a week. I have running background but even in my competitive running days 40+ miles was a heavy week.

How are people who claim to run 40-50 or more miles/week: 1) not in great shape, I mean 6 pack/ripped, and 2) not really fast. Even in my late 30s if I ever got back to running 35-40 miles a week after a year I would be running low 40 minute 10K’s again easy. Are they not running hard enough, not occasionally interval training and mixing in track/speed work?

If you are training for a marathon, you have a few 40+ mile weeks.

Right now I'm at about 12-14 miles a week. Once it cools down I'll steadily bump that back up as training increases. I'm a wuss and don't do well in the heat.

I can elaborate on what I do for cycling. I do build phases that lead into recovery phases. 3-4 week builds entail 12-15hr weeks of cycling. Hard interval training during the week. Usually 2hr workouts. The weekend usually includes 6-10hrs of either exhaustive training rides or focused workouts. That leads up to a recovery phase; which I maybe touch the bike for four hours that week. Break it down to build it up. Gotta allow the body to recover though.

I run 12-15 per week typically.

I rode 56 yesterday. Does that count?

I'm 52 and I run 3-4x per week, 3-4 mi each time.

That's enough to keep me in good shape and still have enough time to have a life.

YMMV.

(ha-ha, I kill me.)

Long distance running produces the exact opposite of a ripped physique.

1) because your body learns to conserve energy while repeatedly performing the same task, so they can run longer while burning less calories per mile. Also, you don't burn nearly as many calories as the fitness cabal would have you believe.

2) they aren't running, they be jogging

Excellent point also.

Running around 30-40 a week right now. Wanting to get in gear in coming months to where I was in 2009-2010, which was between 60-90 miles/week.

If the only cardio I do is running that week, then I get in about 20-25 miles. But I typically rotate between insanity one day, and running the next. Keeps me from getting too bored with my cardio, and I get two completely different forms of exercise. My typical runs are about 5-6 miles at 9-10 minute miles.

I would be willing to bet, most if not all of the people on this board who actually run 40+ miles a week can run a 10k in under 43 minutes or are in really good physical appearance shape.

So, the answer is, they are either lying or they probably are "fast".

If everyone who ran regularly could run a 10K in the low 40's, then you wouldn't be able to come on here and feel superior to everyone.

ETA: my wife can run a 10K in about 42 - 43 minutes...but she wins every race around here and places in New Orleans races...so....there's that.

During the summer I'm trying to get 3-5 miles twice and then 6 - 8 once. Not really "training" for anything at this point but I don't want to lose anything either. Just trying to stay on top of it for fall training.

I'm usually in the 35-40 mile a week category. Since I've moved to Houston its been a lot more trail running in memorial park. It feels like a much better workout compared to just running on concrete.

Currently taking a week off thanks to Salmons recommendation and just doing body circuits.
