I'd love nothing more than ND to stay indy and get left at the station.

Welcome to the B1G
I didn't see this coming, but I'm absolutely thrilled.
Even if Rutgers gets battered back into the pre-Schiano abyss, at least they'll be losing to real teams in a real conference.

Depends on what ND does when the chairs start disappearing and the music stops.
The Big Ten is the best fit for them but they've resisted so far.
I don't see the SEC or Pac 12 taking them, so it's going to be the ACC, Big 12, or independent if they refuse to join when the Big Ten closes in on 16.

quote:Actually, the SEC started it all when it expanded to 12 teams for the 1992 football season. It was the first conference to host a conference championship game.
The ACC started this whole shite storm in 2004 and now its backfired crazy just crazy.

no sure what possibily you mean. That they could remain Indy in FB, yes, i think that's very possible. Though they are in a confernce for other sports for a reason. The deal had with the ACC showed how despate the ACC was.
The left at the station comment is in reference to the money the others stand to make. Your elitism blinds you to the amount of money we are talking about, dismissing it as pocket change. I'm guessing the endowment you speak of is for the University and not the Athletic Department. If there are 16 team conferences, it will be harder to get those big coast to coast games. You are still only talking about a couple of games anyone cares about. The only reason any one cared about BC or Wake this year is because ND was undefeated and in the hunt.

It makes geogprahic sense of course, but I don't think they will join. I still think if they did join a confernce the best bet would be the Big XII with FSU, Clemson and L'Ville.

Sorry if anybody has mentioned this already but why did the Big 10 turn down Missouri for Maryland? Missouri has a much better football program and Maryland doesn't bring anything to the table that really differentiates themselves from Mizzou.

The only way I see them doing this is if they can maintain the sort of semi-independence that Texas has gotten with the Longhorn Network.
The down side to this possibility is that they really don't have much history with any Big 12 team. It would be more of a shotgun marriage than anything else, as most of their traditional rivals are in the Big Ten instead.
Granted, there have been other such shotgun marriages in recent conference expansions, but ND's adamance on their independent status makes it strange that they would join one with only two teams (OU and UT) that they've played at least 10 games against.

Maryland doesn't really have the DC market though. That's an area filled with transplants. UMD does own the Baltimore market but nobody cares about Maryland football. They only care about MD basketball and people will never care as much about playing Michigan State and Indiana like they do about playing UNC and Duke. Oh and FWIW, everybody is hating this move.

Does not matter bc the new big 10 tv deal just got worth more bc every provider will be forced to carry the BTN in dc not just fios or if you had dish or dtv

Much better? Not really. Mizzou just had a five year stretch with three ten-win seasons and five straight strong finishes. Before that, Mizzou hadn't won 9 games in a season since 1969. Mizzou had a nice run as the Big 12 North completely cratered and someone had to win. Cheers to them, but that's not longterm viability.
Maryland is at a low ebb right now since Edsall sucks, but Friedgen had a good program with the same three 10-win seasons in the early aughts. More importantly, other people have won there. Bobby Ross won in the 80s and Maryland was an honest to God power in the 70s. Neither program is a super power, but Maryland has had more historical success and they have pretty similar success in the last decade.
Maryland also has better TV markets, a honest recruiting base that a good coach could actually build something, and access to Under Armour's money pipe. Really, in this window of a new start in the Big Ten and PSU on probation, a good coach could build a 8-9 win program overnight at Maryland. The window is there, but it's only open for a short period.
And it doesn't matter if people watch, just so long as they are added as subscribers. Duke and UNC might be the games Terp fans live for, but they now only play those teams once a year. The old ACC is dead and Maryland was left with a permanent rivalry with Pitt and a home-and-home with teams like Clemson and BC.

This move sucks.
I want teams that will help us improve in athletics, don't give a shite if the B1G prints fricking money but blows arse on the biggest stage. I honestly think the amount of money the Big10 is making is detrimental when all teams make an equal share and they can just sit back and continue to field shitty programs and collect big checks.

Nope "Big XII" want to get into SEC lands for a while now and they know that they need a natural rivalty for WV, Louisville does fit the bill but if they are going off the table, what other team will they go for, USF, Tulane, or somebody else.
I think Tulane has a better shot of going to the ACC with SMU and Rice to replace football schools that leave than they do of getting a Big 12 invite.
Its not a totally crazy idea b/c of their academics and the recruiting it would give Big12 schools access to but barring a Boise St like rise I just don't see them ever being seriously considered.

Let's not also forget that Maryland is a much better school academically. Important to the BIG

big 12 teams cant be poached for 13 years.
They all locked themselves in with a GOR with most recent TV deal.

I think all that bullshite is out the window. It's about TV sets/cable contracts.
95% of Mich fans seem pissed off that the conference won't be realigned to put OSU in the same division. I hope Delany gets to see the day this costs U-M/OSU a MNC shot.

I actually was in huge favor of them being in the same division.
