You said "have to." I clarified that there is nothing forcing cable providers to carry the B1G network. Customer demand may, however, convince them to do it.

It isn't just Maryland (including Baltimore). It's also Washington, DC and northern Virginia. Tons of Maryland alums in this area.

Here's the thing. Revenue for BTN in a non Big Ten area is like .10 a subscription. When a B1G team is in the provider area that number goes up to like .80 a subscription. Eight times the money in two top 10 markets in the country. That's going to be a shitload of coin in the B1G coffers.

Does Maryland have a huge fanbase? For hoops, yes, but maybe not as much for football. But that doesn't matter. DC is a transient town with a lot of transplants. And they carry with them their allegiances to their alma maters. And a lot of those alma mater are Big Ten schools. ACC fans, by and large, don't care about football. But now, UMD's ratings are going to go up because Big Ten fans DO care and they want to watch their team. Where do people think Penn St and Ohio St grads go?
The Wizards have sold tickets based on their opponents for years. Now UMD can do the same.

The cable (and satellite) delivery and pricing structure is on its way out. Are the conferences planning for the future?

BINGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Mizzou fan could not grasp this. Lots of people here just do not understand the DC area college sports scene.

DC is a winner's town. If Maryland football started winning, they'd have packed houses every weekend. It's just that support is soft. Look at G'town hoops. They used to sell out the Cap Center every night. Then they started to suck, and people stopped going. It's not like, say, Penn St where people will go no matter what.

After 24 hours, I for one applaud MD for going to the Big 10. You cannot turn down that type of money.
As much as you want to yell tradition, MD has always been one without a true rival. UNC sees UVa as a rival in football, UVa and VT, Duke-UNC basketball, etc..
They long standing series with PSU...so that might get started again.
And I stated the day we let ND in as a partial member, the ACC was the Nu Big East. That cause instability.
It is all going to start, and you can be sure more ACC members leave.
I honestly cannot figure out if it is someone going to the Big 10 or Big 12 first.
And I hate agreeing with a Mountaineer...when push comes to shove, it will be MD over VT in DC. Over the past couple years, the Nielsen ratings have been pretty even for VT-MD, but if MD starts winning, you will get a bigger jump.

Big East 2.0 same old shite, sorry but VT might be left to rot away in the ACC and its athletics go back to like the 80's. Not trying to be an arse but VT is back in the place it pulled so much bullshite to leave.

I know you hate those businessed because they won't sell you stuff the way you want and no doubt, there will be changes, but the current model is still way cheaper than selling everything a la carte. cable or at least a system where people pay a fixed monthly price for a package of channels will not go away any more than brick and mortor stores.

Maryland has eyed the Big Ten for a long time, but I can pretty much guarantee it became a lot more serious once they learned they were being stripped of the home-and-home annual hoops series with UNC and Duke.

As it affects me, this move is good and bad:
GOOD: no more junior varsity "ACC game of the week" on the local CBS affiliate cutting into the SEC's 3:30 game. Happens all the time and drives me crazy
BAD: possbilty of cable prices rising due to BTN being forced on my area. Basically a Big Ten tax

it would be if it was remotely true, the extra cost of the BTN would be minimal in some sports package and there will be an SECN soon as well.
