Bump for attending a live showing this weekend with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra playing Williams’ score. Highly recommend.

Netflix has a new series called Movies that Made Us and Home Alone is one of the episodes. I thought it was interesting to hear the behind the scenes stories of HA. I did a rewatch of HA which I hadn't in probably over a decade and was surprised the "fight for the house" was almost completely in the last ~27 minutes. In my mind it was the majority of the movie.

And frick it...the brick scene. From this pic, we see that there are ten stairs at the front of the townhouse:

At 7 inches per step (per my measurements here at work), that's 70 inches of steps. At different times, the townhouse is shown to be 3 or 4 stories high. This is the best pic I could find:

If we assume ten feet per floor (so bottom of the door to middle of the brick between the above windows), that would be roughly 30 feet from the front door base to the roof. Add on another couple of feet for the roof barrier, plus Kevin's arm being about two feet above the roof balcony level, as shown below:

...plus the 70 inches (round that to 6 feet), that's right around 40 feet high that he is tossing bricks from. After watching the brick scene, it takes right at 1.4 seconds for the brick to go from Kevin's hand to Marv's face (when he is standing). It also takes 1.6 seconds to reach his face when he's lying on the ground, so I'll ignore the movie mistake of it taking 3 seconds the first and last throws (since that isn't likely and was multiple camera angles) and use 1.5 seconds for the time. And for simplicity's sake, I'll just keep the 40 feet measurement the same.

Using the standard distance = rate x time formula, with d = 40ft, r = ?, t = 1.5 seconds. That yields 26.6666 ("repeating, of course") feet per second. Per google's calculator, that equals just over 18 mph.

So, not even taking the whole "gravity/acceleration" thing into account (which would speed it up, and also considering Kevin is throwing the bricks and they are not just freefalling), the best-case for Marv is that he gets hit in the face with FOUR bricks (estimated at about 6 pounds each) going over 18 mph. Yet isn't even bleeding. That is some serious bullshite.

And this is just me thinking about the movie...I'm sure if I actually watched it and took notes, I'd have a lot more to criticize. But I'll just wait for OML's review and then respond and go from there.

Went back and read the first few pages. And wow, this is awesome

Why didn't the mom just rent a vehicle when landed in scranton? John Candy offered her a ride and she accepted so driving wasn't out of the question.

Also let's break down her timeline:
1. The family had to wait 2 days until Friday
2. She trades tickets with an elderly couple - two tickets for Friday which, btw, would have been her husband's too so how did he get back?
3. That's an 8 hour flight from Paris to Scranton
4. She drives from there to Chicago. It was an 11 hour drive.

That's 19 total hours.

The family and the dad, with no ticket, board Friday and get home at the same time as the mom. Friday morning/midday it seems, when they arrive.

9 total hours.

That means, at best, she only left 10 hours before everyone else and was on standby in the airport 38 hours while the dad and family chilled at the hotel.

Watched some of Home Alone the other day... how shitty are Kevin's parents that they let Uncle Frank and his cousins talk to him like that? I get that Kevin was kind of being a little jerk, but they were all treating him like shite all day.

Noticed this the other day. If anyone talks to my kid that way, especially in my own home, we're throwing hands.

Why would Kevin warm his highly nutritious microwaveable Mac and cheese dinner like 2-3 minutes before he knew the baddies would be arriving? Seems like he should have planned that out a bit better. Maybe wait until after the fight so that he could actually enjoy the food.

I don't think Peter was too bad of a dad. He seems to be the only reasonable adult at times.

RE: HA2 - So is cancelling the credit cards the only way to know where they were being used? WTF wouldn't one of them say, well lets not cancel them, if our son who is alone in NY Fricking City can figure out how to use them, maybe, just maybe it will help him survive. I'm pretty sure I hate his bitch of a mom more than anyone else in either movie. I'm pretty sure Kevin was a mistake and his birth caused her to miss out on some lifelong dream. The only explanation for the way she treats him.

Some other observations:
1) Kevin is lucky he didn't burn down the house with the door handle trap.
2) Who keeps a gallon of roof tar in their house?

I don't remember anything about Peter canceling the cards, just them notifying the CC companies that Kevin had them and that they could track where he was once he used them.

You know what they say, “Don’t fend off burglars with humorous and elaborate booby traps on an empty stomach”

Or is it “Wait one hour after eating before fending off burglars with humorous and elaborate booby traps” ?

Caught it yesterday and thought it was great. I learned a lot of new things about the movie. I bet WB was kicking themselves after they booted the film over a $3 million budget dispute.

This may have already been addressed but Uncle Frank..based on the family dynamic of the McCallister men and their potential criminal ties..if this was Godfather..is Uncle Frank basically Fredo? He's a sniveling weak weasel compared to his brothers..one of whom has a place in France and a Central Park fronted home..the other a high end accountant in Chicago for a mob family.

The extra ticket was probably Kevin's return ticket.

Yeah, but it wouldn't be on the Disney+ app today if they had kept the film.
