I think you're point is a good one, that people shouldn't buy the Judge for home defense, thinking its going to do anything special that other handguns won't. But by the same token... those people could pretty much buy an HK USP and its not going to change anything except they may be able to send more stray rounds into the ceiling, floor, or the nursery.
I agree with you 100% and that's why I really dont like the Judge because I think it is marketed as that "super weapon"..

Box O Truth
Read this and come back and honestly say that the Judge is what you are looking for in a home defense situation. It really is a gimmick gun when used as a self defense gun. None the less, I really want one, but I own plenty of "gimmick" guns.

I posted that link a few weeks ago when a Judge thread came up... no one cared i guess

good article.. informative. we keep #4's in hers..Again,,, main reason is for that semi-panic moment in time where one has to at least hit bad person, and possibly in a dark room.. I feel more confident with her pulling 5 times and spraying a pattern.. Nobody has to agree with me,,, each to his own.. I have not called anybody or their gun a dumbass..

I've seen no one recommend using bird shot for people.
Posted on 1/31/11 at 11:09 am to kkille1lsu
A lot of the problem with the Judge is not "hitability" ( i know that isn't a word), it's the fact that penetration can be very questionable. Sure you may be able to hit someone but if the pellets only penetrate an inch or two that may not help you much if they been up on meth for 4 days... You need a wound channel, that's what stops people in their tracks.

I would hope not. It's called birdshot for a reason

A face full of birdshot would be quite effective in stopping a potential car jacking.
bird shot from car window

In what situation would this be a better option than a pistol grip shot gun (12 or 20 gauge?)
Posted on 1/31/11 at 11:25 am to bayoudude
says that the rifled barrel in the judge causes the shotgun shot to spread out more when exiting the barrel of the gun.

that rifled barrel is the only thing keeping that pistol from becoming a NFA weapon

those videos have to be "gimmicks"...

Great, then ignore the stuff out there testing with it. OTOH, this guy has a point
If you read the entire write-up, it shows bird, buck, slug, and .45 Long.
buck
slug and .45 long
Penetration
2.5" bird
4.5" buck
7.5" slug
15" .45 long
and look how flat the buck was after fired:

You arent going to get this glorious 3ft spread from a .410 at 3 yards
I disagree. What makes buckshot ineffective is a wide open, spaced out pattern, which is what you get out of this thing. A 1" buckshot pattern would bust arse

bad guy trying to car jack you and it's better to shoot him with bird shot then a .45? The buckshot I would be closer to understanding, but even that.
So, what the judge brings to the table=
Good snake gun
Get a "spread"
What it has against it
Grossly under powered
Big and bulky
Grossly under powered
Does nothing really good (unless you hunt a lot of snakes)
Please add your own.

Ok, I admit I'm not a fan of any varieties of the Judge although I do like guns and enjoy shooting them. To me, guns are a tool. Choose the right tool for the right job. The Judge is like the old Ford Ranchero vehicle from years ago, a 2 door car w/ a pick up bed instead of a trunk.....it was neither a truck nor a car so wasn't very useful to enough folks.
Best close round self defense gun--12 gauge shotgun. Best handgun self defense round (w/ the appropriate loads)--357 Mag, 45 ACP, 40 S&W and 9 mm. The 45 Colt that the Judge also shoots is a very good self defense round on it's own, w/ the correct load. OTOH, I've not seen good accuracy reported when shooting 45 Colt's in the Judge.
Glad to see someone posted the info from "The Box of Truth" site. I'll go ahead and post his summary. Admittedly, this test was w/ 2 3/4" shells not 3" shells. I think Taurus now has a 3" chambered version of the Judge, but I doubt the additional 1/4" in the load would make any significant difference of the effectiveness of the load.
From "The Box of Truth" website.
"Lessons learned:
1. Jack bought this pistol for snakes and it looks like a fine tool for that job.
2. Birdshot, in any gauge, is for little birds.
3. Buckshot out of a .410 does not penetrate enough to be an effective personal defense load.
4. The rifled slug was also a disappointment and did not have enough weight or power or penetration to be effective as a defense load.
5. The .45 Long Colt loads had plenty of penetration and would be the preferred defense load for this pistol.
6. It's fun to bust clays with this pistol."
The following website also has good info re: use of shotguns for home defense. A big problem is the lack of actual data of 410 shotguns being used defensively. The best argument for defensive use of the 410 shotgun or pistol is an emotional one that goes something like this: "Shotguns make bad wounds. There's a lot of lead in that load. I sure wouldn't want to get shot w/ it so it should be a good round for self defense." LINK
My thoughts, if you want a good snake gun that will fit in your pocket (wear a stout belt!) or in the console of your car, get a Judge. If you want a good self-defense gun, get a 12 gauge shotgun or own of the aforementioned hangun calibers.
