You can shoot your shotgun (assuming 12 guage)faster than a pistol?? I'm a huge advocate for a shotgun for HD but I dont know if that statement is correct. No way I can fire 16 rounds (if available) out of a 12 guage faster than 16 rounds out of an auto .40.

Not 16. No, but I don't ever expect to have to shoot 16. I can unload 5 out of my Benelli with good accuracy in probably 2 seconds.
If I need more I have a couple P226s and an H&K USP .45 loaded under the bed in a safe.

If you're in a fight where you're going to shoot sixteen rounds you probably could have avoided it in the first place and a pistol is the wrong gun for it anyway. Fights where you shoot that much are what battle rifles were made for.

I consider a handgun, a conceal item and a backup/sidearm item. Its usually not my preferred. That's just me though.

I think in a HD scenario, the closest gun us the preferred one. I would rather have a .22 in my hand than an saiga 12 with a drum mag locked up in a safe when someone kicks down my door. I think that goes alot to situational awareness and being prepared mentally as well as prepared with respect to firearms and training.

Also, a wide spread weapon seems like an awful choice for shooting out in public.

There are ways around this which I had done for my kids when they use 410's for there first deer. Take a 410 shell,open the end and dump the BB's out. From there, take a 12 ga 00 buck shell, open and take 5 of the pellets. Split the pellets about half way. From there, get some 30 lb test fishing line about 12" and crimp the pellets on it. Spreed them out even. Pack that back into the 410 shell and wax the end. This will keep the pellets from spreeding out.
We have 3 of the SS judges in my family. Using these shells, anything within 15 yards is DEAD or going to die! Good thing is that if one shoots this inside a house, sheetrock will stop it somewhat to the next room. That is what one should look for in home protection.

If someone comes in my house in the middle of the night and tries to do harm to myself or my family I'm not gonna stop after 2 shots. I'm making sure he aint getting up. Chances are it would be with a shotgun though so the 16 shot thing was more of a joke. I could grab the AK though...lol
