what's these 2 said.
Why is it that you people think you go to a gun store and see hundreds of standard revolvers and hundreds of standard DA or SA pistols and 1 Judge?

From the Box O Truth:

The rifled slug:
For the .45 round:
Opinions ALWAYS vary. But the novelty of shooting the .410 rounds doesn't appear to me enough to justify it, although I guess it would be cool in the woods to use on varying threats from both small and large.
ETA: Dammit. Just saw the BOT stuff posted.

quote:
The buckshot only penetrated one jug and went into the second one.
That is equal to about 4.5 inches of penetration into ballistic gelatin or bad guy.
Not nearly enough.
The shot were flattened completely, but not from hitting the water jugs.
I believe it is a result of the three pellets being forced down the barrel and smashing each other flat.
The rifled slug:
quote:
penetrated 2 1/2 jugs or equal to 7.5 inches of BG. Again, well short of the 12 inches minimum required for a defense load.
For the .45 round:
quote:
penetrated 5 jugs, or equal to 15 inches of BG.
Plenty of penetration, but the expansion was not very good, a problem with this particular bullet
quote:
Lessons learned:
1. Jack bought this pistol for snakes and it looks like a fine tool for that job.
2. Birdshot, in any gauge, is for little birds.
3. Buckshot out of a .410 does not penetrate enough to be an effective personal defense load.
4. The rifled slug was also a disappointment and did not have enough weight or power or penetration to be effective as a defense load.
5. The .45 Long Colt loads had plenty of penetration and would be the preferred defense load for this pistol.

Read this and come back and honestly say that the Judge is what you are looking for in a home defense situation. It really is a gimmick gun when used as a self defense gun. None the less, I really want one, but I own plenty of "gimmick" guns.

bird shot from car window
If it can't stop a 78 year old attorney...
I sure as hell am not going to use it to stop a thug.

You are going to get a much bigger pattern than a 9mm or 40 cal.

And if your lucky 1 or 2 of those pretty small 00 pellets might hit the perp. I promise you I'm gonna hit him with at least 10 hollow points or whatever comes out the end of one of my 12 guages. That's what I like about being as well equiped as possible in home defense situations. If I hit someone in the gut from 10ft with a 12 guage, there isn't a whole lotta wondering if your safe at that point.

Opposite end of the spectrum. I say too much for home defense. Too much recoil for an accurate follow up shot.

It's never going to be judge vs. 12 gauge.

You are probably a better shot than most people. For someone who does not regularly handle a gun, a 410 pistol would be a more effective home defense weapon than a high caliber pistol.

I hear ya but anyone that plans to defend their home/family with a firearm should be trained to do so. An untrained person waving a Judge around is not something I want to be around.

he's right. a 410 round of buckshot to the mouth only tickles late at night

Anything the judge can do, another revolver can do better
Snakeshot?...name me another pistol that will shoot snakeshot?...

No, the .45 long colt is a powerful round. How many defense platforms do you see built around it? There are much better choices.
Posted on 1/31/11 at 3:38 pm to INFIDEL
It's pretty much the best hangun ever made in every catagory.

So if I'm shooting a .410 slug why do I need a shotgun pistol? There are many handgun rounds that are going to be more effective and do more damage than a .410 slug.

Where does the guy in the BOT vid get the 12" peneration requirement for personal defense rounds?
Not many adults and certainly no meth heads have a chest thickness of 12 inches. The standard for depth of penetration of a lethal stab is >3 inches. You will puncture lung or heart or major vessle with a wound that deep in 80% of general public.
