I'm pretty laid back as well and I usually tip more than I should.

But that being said, I've worked in the service industry and I know the correct way to do things. I know when someone is half assing their job even if it doesn't affect my dining experience.

Most cities seem to have a core of professional service industry types, but I don't see that in br.

I think what you're getting at is the difference in service between someone who waits for a long term living and someone who waits as a temp job in between classes.

Not necessarily

I've seen some of the temp college kids be much better servers than some of the service industry lifers

it is all about how someone is raised, the work ethic they have, and the pride they take in themselves and being good at what they do ... i worked at jiffy lube in the afternoons and on weekends in my first two years of college .. i was in the fricking pit, no one saw me, i had no interest in getting my degree and changing oil at jiffy lube .. but i busted my arse to do a competent job because that was just how i was raised ... i sat around and watched dudes in the pit that had been with jiffy lube for ages and are prolly still there frick off, frick up, etc. .. just varies from person to person, imo ..

The whole "service sucks in BR because all the wait people are college kids, and that's just how it's going to be" idea is such a freaking cop out.

It all comes down to management and ownership. If you're okay with and/or can make money having a waitstaff offer crappy arse disinterested type service, I guess you will. If you want to actually put forth the effort to make sure your staff busts its arse, they can do that also. It's not like people (even college students) aren't capable of doing that.

I guess I just don't get the fuss over "service" in general. Short of (1) outright rudeness or (2) major screwups like bringing the wrong thing, it's just not that big an issue to me. I'm way more interested in the food.

It just kind of baffles my mind that there are people who go to restaurants thinking "I swear to God this waiter better not serve me from the wrong side or so help me I don't know what will happen." Plus you have these people with 100% heartfelt, and directly opposite, views -- should the dishes be cleared before everyone is done, or not? Apparently no matter which one a waiter chooses he's going to seriously piss off one poster in this thread.

To me, the best service is that which I don't notice.

I think what most are asking for is at least a min. level of service. However, with most of the college age servers, they have never been exposed to what the min. level of service should be. They don't dine out at expensive restaurants, and unless their parents were wealthy enough to bring them out to experience this, they just don't know. Then you have the problem with management trying to train and coach the service staff into the actions, but some are just uncoachable. I think that is why it is so hit or miss.
Good restaurants have pivot point systems, training programs, service seminars, wine and menu tastings...and there are still the few that don't pick up the knowledge...those are the ones that you need to weed out, and hire new to replace. And...the process of training starts over.

I guess it's like that for any service. I remember when I was looking for a job in high school at the mall, every store I applied in was simply fill out an application and either you're hired or not.
But I spoke with a manager at New York and Company and I remember her saying "We are a 100% labor-intensive company. We expect you to put in a real effort and take this job seriously. We refuse to hire anyone who does not".

It didn't bother me any, but some people seriously left right when she said that and didn't even bother applying. I suppose when there are other places down the road that expect no effort, it's hard for the ones that do to find employees because they can all go elsewhere.

It's pathetic and sad, really. And I assume it's the same in the restaurant business. The lazy people are going to flock to places where they don't have to work hard, so the places that require it are either stuck with lazy employees or understaffed :(

Posters complain about poor service on this board all the time, I don't see it. Rarely is service bad enough that I notice. My mother-in-law used to complain about service all the time, she was a critical and demanding person who made servers uneasy. Mystery solved.

I engage the server in a friendly manner and maybe I look like a good tipper.

I don't have bad service very often either. I also make it a point to be friendly and to let the server know I'm happy to be there. I don't have a long conversation. I just make the necessary conversation a friendly one.

if you have never been to a fine dining establishment, you will not know what service is expected. the whole serving from the left, bussing from the right, you only learn that at high end places. yeah you mnight learn that at appplebees, but it is not expected. there is a reason high end places are expensive, they expect that kind of service and details. ive worked high end restraunts and received tons of trainimg and when i go out, i do pay attention to the server. its not going to piss me off if he serves from the wrong side though.

Full disclosure, I'm a server.

That being said, I hate when a server either grabs my plate without asking, and if they ask "you done with that". I prefer servers asking if "I can get your plate out of you way, sir?"

I hate it when a server looks at me while they are speaking to me. I mean who the frick do they think they are? Typical college kids and Baton Rouge attitude.

Same here. And my fiancée still gets all embarrassed when I politely tell the waiter that we will order our entree when our app arrives. I'm not a dick about it, but man does it piss me off.

Shoot me now...This sounds like something out of Dear Abby. If this is what bothers you about service then you're probably one of those who enjoys white zinfandel, has your initials embroidered on your shirt sleeves, and reads books entitled "The Way Things Ought To Be". ...and don't forget to order white wine with fish, and red with beef...it's the proper way.
