I really didn't like the French Connection films either.
Along with Goodfellas, this is my favorite film of all time (part I).
I like the second one as well, but it's nowhere near the original. One of the most original endings in film...simple and "cop-outish", but awesome in the same.

I liked him in Behind Enemy Lines and he was really good as Little Bill in The Unforgiven.

Liked everything he's done.
"Crimson Tide" gets my vote for his best performance, even though he's probably been in better movies.

It looks as though not enough people have seen The French Connection. I think Hackman himself would tell you that this is the role he put the most into, as he played Popeye Doyle - a real-life character (who actually plays Hackman's boss in the film).
Please rent this classic and give your opinion. It's a 1971 film, so don't expect it to be like Transformers or anything. Still, the best car chase scene in any movie around.

His monologue in Unforgiven about English Bob's past...
one of the best performances ever. I think he got best SA for that right?
