Vetting of Portal Kids re: Sorsby

This Sorsby news today is really interesting to me for a few reasons. One, it makes you wonder how much TT already gave him upfront, and what they will do now that he might be punished or ruled ineligible.
But I do think this is an important domino to fall…. The NFL has tons of people dedicated to finding out everything about potential draftees. It’s pretty damn rare the NFL teams miss something (most recently Nuss cyst on spine).
I wonder if CFB teams will now start investing more into character and health screenings for portal kids, to mirror somewhat what NFL scouts do.
The timing in CFB is the problem, but more bodies and investment in vetting maybe would have tipped off TT to steer clear.
Obviously LSU didn’t see this coming when we vetted Sorsby which is concerning to some degree.

at a minimum players should actually have to be eligible to play in games to receive $
a lot will depend on what the NCAA does, do they suspend him for any games
my guess is he did probably get some sort of upfront signing amount

Well if he was smart.... which obviously he isn't, then you aren't doing any gambling in your name and you work this through a well trusted 3rd party. More than likely, someone got greedy and wanted more that they were getting OR he lost and left someone holding the bag.

TT on3 board saying it was Cincinnati that tipped off the NCAA.
Not sure how they even knew as it's being reported this happened at Indiana.
Point is maybe someone did ask if there was anything to be concerned about, and Cinci played a bit of chess and waited until he officially signed somewhere to frick both Sorsby and his new school.

There should be provisions and clawbacks in all NIL deals.

The issue is the time crunch. Schools have legit 2 weeks to get guys signed and enrolled so they are eligible to participate in Spring. IDK how you can possibly vet these kids to an acceptable degree in that timeframe.

I seem to remember reports that the LSU staff was split between Sorsby and Leavitt because of Leavitt’s injury. I’d imagine teams do as much due diligence as they can. Not sure how they are supposed to snoop out betting though. Also not sure how much money that type of stuff costs. People still underestimate how much more money NFL teams have compared to college teams.

NFL teams also have a lot more time. Deadline for college players to declare for the NFL draft is in mid-January, so they have 3+ months between then and the draft for due diligence.
NCAA transfer portal gives them 2 weeks and you're not even sure ahead of time which of your own players you might have to replace in the portal.

The NFL, NCAA, et al fricked around by getting in bed with sports gambling. Now they're going to find out in a big way. Sorsby is hardly the only athlete out there with a gambling addiction.

I think guys willing to leave good situations and transfer anywhere, just looking for the highest bidder is a bit of a red flag by itself. But it’s so common now it won’t be treated that way.

Cincinnati is currently suing Sorsby over 1 million they say they are owed due to his contract breach. You can put the rest of the pieces together from there

I think it would be interesting if the NFL allowed him to join their supplemental draft

You’d be insane to not leave a good situation for double your current earnings. I love my job and enjoy my coworkers and company, but if a competitor offered me double to do the same job, I’m gone. And so would everyone else here

Exactly.
The disconnect between sports and the everyday world for some is always amazing.
If you or your buddy gets offered a significant salary increase by a competitor everyone would say you are silly for not accepting the offer Yet, if a college football player does the same exact thing it is a "red flag"

NFL teams also employ former law enforcement officers that can find out any and all info on players. They’ll spend 6-7 months digging up any info they can on potential draft picks or FA signings.
College teams get a couple of weeks to convince a player to hop in the portal and then hope to not get in a bidding war with another team.

If LSU is only offering me $500k to return and a school like Texas is offering $2m, I would be throwing up the horns. You can’t look at these situations anymore through your schools colored glasses because players don’t.

Most professional contracts have a morals clause that would protect the school and the NIL entity. I would have to assume most of these NIL contracts have them.
