I’m having trouble justifying my stance against the death penalty…

Over the years, I have become more and more against the death penalty, but this case involving the murder of Athena Strand, a young girl who screamed and pleaded for her mother as her kidnapper brutally molested and murdered her, is really testing my limits.

Man some things just shouldn’t be posted. My fault for clicking the thread but I didn’t think it would this bad.

if you kill someone on purpose you should die.
Shouldn't be that difficult of a conundrum.

Most people against the death penalty (when older) are just aware of how corrupt the government machine is, in everything. In this case, government ineptitude will get the guy life in prison instead of the jab.

If you have a hard time grappling with if he should be killed, you are part of the problem. They should take him behind the court house and pop him in the back of the head with a .22.

I am against death penalty if replaced by torture. Worse the crime, slower the torture. This event earns perp 90-days of torture in my kingdom - 90th day he will be given a choice - suicide or 90-days more. Rinse/repeat. Game of Thrones comes for his evil soul.

I have no issue with the death penalty in theory. My problem is I don't trust the government to properly implement it.
Both cops and prosecutors have shown time and again they will either fabricate evidence indicating guilt or withhold exculpitory evidence when it suits them.

I'm actually more hard core. I don't think we kill enough people. Also with DNA evidence they shouldn't live 10+ years waiting.
I would lock some of these scum in a put and let them starve.

Yep, I have two main problems with it.
(1) I can't trust the government to have a 100% success rate which means we would be sentencing some innocent people to death.
(2) The cost of carrying out the death penalty is substantially more expensive than sentencing a person to life in prison.

What’s there to explain, if you think the guy who raped and murdered a little girl shouldn’t be put to death, then your soft on crime stance is why people continue to commit crimes. No different than the judges who continually release repeat offenders until they rape and murder some one.
This is why Singapore is one of the safest countries in the world because they don’t put up with bullshite.

Grow some fricking balls. Its pathetic that you dont support the death penalty. These lunatics know they can kill and be released back into population during their lifetime.
Bring back brutal executions so people are scared to commit crime and stop being a pussy

I want to understand your argument.
You think the death penalty is a deterrent to such behavior?
You think justice deters evil decision-making.

Sometimes there are people who no matter what are just not compatible to live amongst the rest of us. Unfortunate, but it is what it is.

Then we need to streamline it and make it cheaper.

Let’s look up this guys rap sheet, I bet he didn’t just wake up one day and say hey I’m going to rape and murder someone..
Yes I think if you are more tougher on crimes and have harsher consequences then people will think twice before doing something. Not just the mentality of “hey I get 3 hots and a cot for the rest of my life watching tv with my homies”…

Man look. If this guy did what hes accused of, and we have irrefutable proof, I wont lose any sleep over his death.
But we know we have put innocent people to death so I cant really be pro death penalty. Doesnt really seem to be much of a deterrent either.

The photo is haunting. This guy should be placed in a wood chipper feet first.

This is exactly it. Imprisonment for the rest of their lives solves the problem just as effectively if they are guilty, without risking a horrible and irreversible mistake. How many exonerations from technological advancement do we need before people realize that maybe there's value in leaving open the chance, however remote, that the government made a mistake due to incompetence or simple technological failure?
I would also add this: look at how passionate some of the responses in here are. Wanting to torture people to death, declaring those of us who understand the government can make mistakes to be "part of the problem," etc. I think it's a problem when the counterargument is pure bloodlust and not rooted in any rational basis for why execution, specifically, is needed over imprisonment until they die.
