April 13, 2026 – Online sports betting is growing as a facet of American life, with 27% of Americans and half of men ages 18-49 (52%) saying they have an active account with an online sportsbook such as DraftKings, Caesars, FanDuel, or BetMGM, according to a new survey of United States residents released today by the Siena Research Institute (SRI) and St. Bonaventure University’s Jandoli School of Communication. This trend is up from 22% of Americans in 2025 and 19% in 2024, showing a slow but steady increase in online sports betting interest over the past few years of the survey. A third of Americans (33%) say they have opened an account at least once.

I decided to never own an account watching friends glued to their phones over random hockey and football games nobody cares about. Seems too obsessive with trying to understand odds

49 is considered a “young man”. Nice. Made my day.

I dodged a serious bullet by not being born ten to fifteen years later. A smart phone and betting app would have crushed me in college.

For people my age, thankfully you could only do so much damage in a weekly poker game with a 10 dollar buy in.

I was on 5dimes pretty habitually years ago. Moving to Texas cured my habit pretty much overnight since I can’t use them. Now I gamble with crypto and stocks instead.

Made some free money from the apps when it first became legal with all the deposit match bonuses they were offering trying to get market share

Like probably 2-3k

Pulled all money out except for a couple hundred each in DK and FD and have played with that since and have never reupped

I have seen first hand multiple professional people who have had their lives destroyed by gambling. They too always said they were winning. The proliferation of these gambling apps is a disaster for the country and its people.

Would be nice to have a decent betting app in Texas where I could throw $10 at a multi-team college football parlay

Exactly.

I'm not the most moral person in the world, but I don't think having all the porn and gambling in the world at your fingertips and a weed shop on every other corner is healthy. Oh, and there's lots of alcohol and SSRIs, too.

I have gambled less with it becoming legal. There was something special about getting up on a Saturday morning and making the final decision on who you will bet on, calling your bookie, if you win you go collect on Tuesday.

And then there were the parlay cards, you put $10 down and pick 3... sometimes 4 teams..

Years ago, one time I had a winning weekend and went collect... Father.. the priest, is coming out counting his money... But you don't have those interactions now that all you have to do is pick up your phone, go to the app and place any bet you want. If there is a game I really like I will bet it.. Smart phones have taken that away from people.

I have noticed that older people... I guess late 50 and older (I am talking in general), who have always gambled... placing bets on games, it doesn't interest them anymore.. And I think the social aspect of it was the most important part for them. Today, with the betting apps and being able to do all of these parlays and betting the spread by quarters, etc.. They just stealing money from people.

I don’t have any problem with the gambling aspect but it is concerning that so many of them are watching sports

The increase in so many of them identifying as lgbt is probably directly correlated to sports watching

Imagine paying money to watch men. Seems pretty gay to me

Vegas has evolved. It now generates more money from non gambling entertainment than from gambling. Gambling is still a draw, but not like it used to be.
