What is the thing you thought would bring you happiness? But didn’t.

New car/truck/suv?
Promotion?
Marriage?
Kids?
House?
Pool?
Some toy?
Me getting banned????
I’ve found happiness comes from within and nothing external can bring it. Sure they can bring some temporary joy but happiness must be found within.

Ungodly amounts of money.
And it didn't bring me happiness because I have yet to achieve it.

The anticipation of buying something or a trip or new car is always better than when you actually get said thing or event.

I think you have joy and happiness backwards

No stuff can do it... "No matter where you go, there you are"

I thought I would get happiness from constantly going out with my friends (anywhere from 3-6 nights a week).
Constantly talking to girls at bars and hooking up with them. Doing cocaine and occasionally mdma.
It was fun for a little. But I was wrong. What really has brought me happiness has been getting a girlfriend and hanging out with her at home. I rarely go out now. No hard drugs, rarely drink either.
I still smoke a lot of weed though.

I’ll present the anti-thesis of this thread
I thought I’d be happy being married and having kids and man am I happier than I ever thought I’d be with both. Yea there’s hard moments but man there’s nothing like coming home at the end of a day at work to the love and affection of my family. Or waking up on the weekend and realizing I get to spend the whole day with my favorite people. Shits awesome.

I will add that my recent trip to England and Ireland did grant me a tremendous amount of happiness

Money. When I was in my early 20s I didn’t have much. Now in my mid 30s I have a lot more. I think I was happier in my early 20s because of the less responsibilities

They weren't for your happiness. It should make you happy knowing your husband is happy about them. Assuming you have a husband.

This!
But when I realized it was just trading time, talent and effort for life…family, fun, future…is when joy arrived. Means to that end. Nothing more.

I decided what I wanted when I was around 21. None of the things on my list were material possessions. I wanted a peaceful household, a happy marriage and kids that were happy.
I achieved those things inasmuch as it's in my power to do so.
As far as material things, I figured out a long time ago that I enjoy doing the work. I don't enjoy getting the thing, I enjoy doing the work to get the thing. The "thing" doesn't really matter.

Having a physically beautiful girlfriend as the main priority in the relationship.
She was so superficial I was absolutely miserable in the relationship
