I always thought being an adult and doing whatever I wanted would make me happy. Boy was I wrong!

Ungodly amounts of money.

And it didn't bring me happiness because I have yet to achieve it.

I sure would like to try and see if it would though.

Not to be a dick, but people who are constantly let down when they accomplish something or get something probably aren't very introspective about what they're after or are just immature.

I'm materialistic. I like stuff. I know I like it, I know I like the anticipation as much as the thing. Learning about whatever it is, picking what I want, waiting for it, making use of it.

So I'm pretty rarely disappointed in a meaningful way by said thing. Even if it doesn't live up to expectations, I got a large swath of what I wanted out of it in the lead up to it. But then I'm the type who takes joy in a new pack of pens, so perhaps I'm easy to satisfy.

I thought I would get happiness from constantly going out with my friends (anywhere from 3-6 nights a week). Constantly talking to girls at bars and hooking up with them. Doing cocaine and occasionally mdma.

After the chase of what it is that you want is over, life begins to lose meaning.

I'm 61 and am very much starting to kind of feel this way-- I say "kind of" because it's not that life loses meaning after the chase is over, but it feels very different. As in I have no more goals to achieve, no "next step" mission to accomplish.

I'm still here to love and look after others (mainly my family) as I have been doing, but everything else has been completed.

It's a given that retirement in 6 years will be reached. The only other thing I look forward to is (hopefully) grandkids, but having those is not on me.

I bought a motorcycle because I thought that I would really enjoy riding it.

And I do!

Everytime I go fishing. I keep thinking it will make me happy, but then I catch nothing and end up with tons of mosquito bites and realize fishing sucks

Money isn't everything, Not the key to happiness. You know what is? Joy. You should remember that.
