Why movie theaters are failing. Yes, Hollywood is making mostly trash, but that's not all.

Went to a movie today, and the ticket said :15 after the hour. So before the movie, a barrage of ads (the 1st one had a lesbian couple raving about their new shower fixture - sure) and one crap thing after another. Half of them were THEATER ads pitching the stuff you've already purchased, as you wait for the movie to start. We get it, popcorn, candy & drinks. We had to pass the massive concession desk on the way to our seats. The same stuff we've been buying at theaters since before the Great Depression!
Then no less than 8 movie previews. + 1 more Fathom event (which does look kinda cool)
25 minutes later, at :40 after the hour, the 156 minute movie STARTED.
But apparently ads make the theater more $ than the $16 ticket or $20 + medium popcorn and drink. So expect it go get worse before they all just shut down for good.

I get the ads for concessions from their angle since it’s the main way they make money and stay afloat. But it is tiring.
With being able to choose seating now, I’ve become far less attached to getting there “on time” and know full well I have upwards of half an hour before the movie starts.
I also just generally go to theaters a lot less than I used to. And it’s not just the shite quality of movies across the board, but I think I just have cooled on the whole theater experience as a whole as I’ve gotten older.

I used to work at a movie theater 20 years ago
Previews have ALWAYS been 20-30 minutes no matter the type. Every time this comes up multiple posters state the same. The movies start 20-30 minutes after listed start time for at least 20 years. Grow up and get over it. That has nothing to do with lower theater attendance unless you have the attention span of a 5 year old.

Yeah I agree it's crazy. If a movie starts at 8:30 that's when I leave my house. Then stop at Walgreens and get candy. Then go to theater.
I rewatched Hail Mary the other day 9:40 movie. I left my house at 10. Got in the theater right when the first classroom scene started.

Alamo could advertise plenty of shite without delaying the start time that much.
But get bent. I look at run times when I schedule movies, because I have other shite to do. If it says 2:15, and it turns out to be 2:55, that's not OK.
Until Alamo turned to Flix, I have been to a non Alamo theater five times in a decade. None of them have done previews (I mean lights down, not the rando Maria Menunos shite that runs that some theaters) that long.
Are you just trying to excuse yourself for showing up waiving a phone light around trying to find your seat 5 minutes into the movie? Cause it sounds like it.

You’re wrong. 20-30 mins of previews has not been the normal length of previews for 20 years
Here’s an Atlantic article from 2014 citing a professor saying 10-15 mins was the national average

I’m not paying crazy prices to watch a movie with shitheads on their phone and talking the whole time. I have a prime home theater setup and enjoy it with family. One of my best investments/upgrades over the years. Even my kids now say… “we’ll just wait till it comes out”.

Where does AMC say that? Used to be +15 minutes was a solid standard to go by from listed time to playing the movie.
