Does your Southern Accent Come and Go?

I've noticed my accent is much milder when I'm at work and talking to yankees and benchods all day, but when I get back from a vacation I'm talking like a redneck again.
I've also noticed that alcohol intake brings it out more.
And in any conversation that involves hunting/fishing/construction, it comes out more.

Mine gets much more pronounced when I go back to where I grew up. Much lighter in professional settings.

Directly proportional with bourbon.

Regional dialects, particularly Southern and those of Appalachia, are quickly fading away. What began with radio ramped up with TV, and became inevitable with the internet. In another generation or two we will all sound pretty much the same. That's kind of sad to me.

I try to control mine.
Ppl tend to believe a Southern accent = lack of education.
Libs started that shite.

That can be a very valuable weapon if you ever need it.

My ex gf was from upstate NY. I'd actually dial up my Southern accent because all of her friends up there absolutely loved it and the guys thought it was hilarious. Her friends thought it was hot, which of course rustled her, which only made me do it more because I thought it was funny. In hindsight, it was a jackass move, but I was an immature jackass then.
Edit: Yes, it is directly proportional to bourbon content. Particularly on fall Saturdays at UK games.

Spot on. Work from home in B’ham for a company that’s based in Minneapolis with clients primarily based in the Northeast. I present a lot and apparently have a “serious” voice according to the wife ( no pics) while I’m presenting or on calls. Now you give me a few beers, or catch me at the camp in the fall/winter and my natural Sip/Bama m drawl or whatever you want to call it comes out.

I pretty much sound the same in whatever setting I’m in

Lost my NY accent within months of escaping. Southern guys I worked with were shocked to learn I was from up north. “You’re not rude at all” they said lol.
I clearly remember my first natural “y’all”. I kind of froze up, looking at faces as though they were going to call me out on it. Calling everyone “sir” took a while to feel normal. You might call a cop or an important customer sir up north but even then it’s not common. Also, learned saying I’m from “up north”, when asked, seems to go over better than saying I’m from NY.
I do notice my accent come back when I get real tired and aggravated. Or after talking on the phone with old friends. Ooohfff faghettaboutit.

Same, it also comes out more once I get drunk or buzzed.

My accent was much thicker before I heard myself recorded as a Senior in High School,
I mellowed it. Yankees and Micwesterners still comment on it. I just smile remembering what it once was.
OTOH I can pass for Bavarian because my German accent was learned in that part of Germany.

I have tried a lot of cases from MD up to MA, and it is indeed useful. My natural accent is Charlestonian, which makes heads snap in MA since they are also non-rhotic.

Never thought I had an accent until I moved to MN.
I get 2 words out here and people ask where I'm from.

I’ve got a very thick southern accent. I moved out of the deep south in my mid-20s, now in my mid 40s it hasn’t changed at all. It’s stronger than both my parents and all my siblings. Get asked all the time where I’m from lol. Wouldn’t change it if I could. It’s who I am.

Women love it, if it's not over the top.
They also love Southern manners, in addition to other things we do well.
Bless their hearts...
