Does anyone else like it? You can eat on this all week, even for breakfast.

I came up with my own recipe. It is not set in stone. You can play around with the ingredients.

FILLING

1 Tsp. olive oil
1/2 Medium onion, diced
1-1/3 Pounds of hamburger
3 Tsp. flour
1 Cup beef broth
2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1-1/2 tsp. Salt
1/2 tsp. Back pepper
1-1/2 Cups frozen vegetables

MASHED POTATOES

2 Pounds potatoes
4 Tsp. Unsalted butter
1/2 Cup heavy cream
1 tsp. Salt
1-1/2 tsp. White pepper
1/2 tsp. Granulated garlic
1/4 Cup Parmesan cheese
Blend together.

1) Saute onion in oil until translucent.
2) Add hamburger and cook. Break apart until browned.
3) Add flour and combine with hamburger.
4) Add beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper and vegetables.
5) Simmer until thickened.
6) Put filling in a casserole dish and cover with mashed potatoes.
7) Cook at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until tops of potatoes start to brown.

That’s cottage pie. Shepherd’s pie is made with lamb. In either event, I’m a big fan of both.

It's been a while since I made it, but I used to do a version that starts with a good, thick beef stew made with small diced chuck roast, peas, carrot, etc. Put it in a casserole dish and apply the mashed potatoes like icing. Bake in oven for a bit, top with grated cheddar cheese, broil to melt, then sprinkle with parsley or green onions.

I’ve only had it a few times from a grocery deli and I liked it. It was basically a beef stew topped with mashed potatoes.

I like going 50/50 with ground venison and ground lamb, but I love a hint of gamey in my dishes.

ETA: I use canned Veg-All because I want the veggies as a backdrop and the frozen ones tend to stay a little too al dente for me.

Our version growing up had some combination of green beans, peas and/or corn mixed in with the meat. Dad never liked it, so we didn’t have it that often

I made a dish inspired by Shepherd’s pie with diced sweet potatoes on top instead of mashed potatoes. Maybe it was more of a hash, but it was delicious nonetheless.

Cauliflower mash for the topping is faster to make (microwave) than using potatoes, and it is splendid. A Guinness should obviously be used in the cooking of the dish, and consumed along side it.

Ground lamb is readily available so why not use that?
If you don't like the flavor that's OK, but realize this isn't Shepherd's Pie.

We do a lighter version with ground turkey and mashed sweet potatoes. My daughter named it Thanksgiving pie.
