BATON ROUGE — A fight broken up at Scotlandville High Monday led to a shooting on Fairchild Street that afternoon, according to police.

A 15-year-old who broke up the fight and “choked out” one of the fighters at school was accosted that afternoon as he and two younger friends walked to the store, an arrest warrant said.

Two people in black hoodies and ski masks confronted him on Fairchild near Elm Grove Garden Drive. He was shot in the arm. His friends, who were 13 and 14, were not injured.

The teen who got “choked out” has been arrested in the shooting.

Byron Martin Jr., 17, was booked Tuesday with attempted first-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon.

Martin’s arrest warrant said he and another student fought at school Monday. The 15-year-old stepped in to pull Martin off the other student involved in the fight, the warrant said.

“Martin was choked out by the victim as he was being subdued,” the warrant said.

Both students were suspended and sent home early, the warrant said.

After investigators identified Martin as the suspected shooter, they searched his home on Flicker Street on Tuesday and found a box of 9mm bullets in a “hidden compartment” in his bedroom closet, the warrant said.

They also found a loaded magazine in his backpack and a black hoodie and ski mask in a vehicle parked behind the house, the warrant said.

No gun was found during the search, the warrant said.

Getting choked out by a person breaking up a fight you are involved in certainly qualifies as disrespek.

mighty bold of you to assume any parental involvement at all here. This just screams one of those "auntie" situations. Dad is dead/jailed/MIA and mama is a drug addicted hoe somewhere. That's my guess anyway.

Well said. Byron could’ve had a better outcome if the community had stepped up and properly funded this young man’s school. Hearty breakfast. Better tech. After school mentorship opportunities. We can do this.

It’s a fricking shame. I don’t even know how this happens.

No one is raising these kids.
