Agreed. Unfortunately, Jay seems to disagree.

We need Cowan right where he is. Need someone reliable in back end of the pen

Jay is not afraid to change. Last year Shores was the Sunday starter...until he wasn't. And Suddenly it was TBD.

Schmidt is great, but when Evans is on, he is almost unhittable. Go watch last Friday night. Does he need to be more consistent? Sure! But the ceiling is the highest.

Also, pitchers have bad days...Skenes didn't even get through 1 inning on Opening day. Evans will be fine and when Moore is back it is actually the right setup. It gives you the greatest advantage on Saturday and Sunday.

I mean he’s been the best pitcher thus far. I don’t think this team really has an Ace. Which is ok

Schmidt and Evans, when they are on, are both really really good.,
Schmidt has been more consistent.
Moore has been consistently good as well.

Evans has been shaky, at times and our bullpen has been inconsistent.

I’m not sure Will is mentally ready for the bright lights of Friday nights against everybody else’s #1. Baby steps. He did great today moving from 3 to 2. But he doesn’t have a performance in him that Evans did against OU last week. Yet. It may be coming.

I just think Evans is mentally ahead of Schmidt currently, despite last night’s free passes. Helluva job getting through 6 with only giving up 4 runs, though. Schmidt was great today. But his counterpart for UK was not even close to as good as their Friday night guy.

Agree. There’s no reason Evans can’t overcome an uneven season so far and be consistently great. I think there’s good reason to believe Evans and Schmidt will still end up being that really strong Fri/Sat combo. Add in Moore on Sundays when he returns and that is a heck of a 1,2,3 punch.

Who cares who’s the ace, we need them both to pitch good to be successful

I’m not ready to take Evans out of the Friday spot, especially after the bounce back he had to still eat innings after the first two last night.

Schmidt gave up zero runs tonight. We won the game because of this. What does it matter what their pitcher did last night?

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. It’s what Cowan feels comfortable with and we have very few consistent players we can count on right now.

I feel like the experiment with Cowan as a starter played out last year. I agree, he’s right where he needs to be!

I’d like to see Schmidt get out of the fifth inning more than once before CJJ starts him on Friday.

one thing i said about schmidt to take it to the next level was that his strikes need to be located better and not right down the middle. It seem like the last few games that has happened.

He's certainly pitching better.

This! I like him coming in after a hard-thrower. He is such a different type pitcher from a fast ball guy and really forces batters to adjust. Pair him with Schmidt all year.
