Will be interesting to see what magnitude of punitive damages the jury awards in the California case. That will determine whether the defendants view the result as a victory or a defeat.
Edit: Apparently, the jury only awarded 3 million in punitives. Very modest.

I think they now have the equivalent of the Foyle Memorandum in the tobacco suits and it will drive punitive damages.

Not to mention these social media companies let you say mean things about Israel and everybody knows what lawyers are

Really, the case is ridiculously retarded, and people would realize how ridiculously retarded the case is if you applied to an industry that's less hated than Big Tech.
Like imagine a lawsuit against Hershey for making candy that's too addictive or something. (Heck, their candy probably has "addictive chemicals" in a more literal sense than social media does.)
And imagine lawsuits against toy truck companies for having "addictive" flashing lights.

Jurors found that Instagram's parent company Meta and Google's YouTube acted with "malice, oppression, or fraud" which means there will also be punitive damages determined on top of the $3 million total compensatory damages. There will be a hearing where all parties have 20 minutes to speak to assess punitive damages.

I stubbed my toe this morning getting ready for work. Should I sue the furniture maker and the store that sold it to me?

Just like the COX music lawsuit, the end consumer will end up footing the bill for this.
Hell, META might just add this to the utility costs for data centers

It's the easiest thing in the world to quit.
I've quit it dozens of times.

Well, that depends. Did you repeatedly keep stubbing it on said furniture?

When I made the original post I may have left the impression I supported such cases.
I do not. I raise my kids. No need for courts to help.
Just pointing out that this looks like the next big target to skim for the plaintiff bar.

Nothing will happen. They’ll just put “warning labels” on the platforms. Much like the cigarette companies. You knew this would cause harm…..fine, warning labels. People still want the addiction.

If the furniture manufacturer went out of its way to design its furniture in a way that significantly increases the chance of you stubbing your toe and designed the features of the furniture to maximize damage and pain when you do stub your toe, then maybe. A similar hypo could be crafted where the store should also share part of the liability.
Your analogy was incredibly kind to the SM companies.

I really hate plaintiffs lawyers. Total scum who do nothing but extort the producers of this world to line their own pockets. It’s nothing but a giant wealth transfer scam enabled by legal extortion. And they’re enabled by the Democrats who write the laws that allow it.
