I charted every Oklahoma AB

One of the things that's been most frustrating to me this season has been what seems to be the inability of the pitching staff to get ahead in counts. Feels like we are always immediately behind 2-0 or 3-1. So I decided to chart every batter Oklahoma sent to the plate last night to see how often we throw first pitch strikes and what the results of the at-bats are. Obviously Casan shoved so this data will be positive rather than the negative I thought it would show, but here it is regardless. Number nerds, enjoy.
Evans
-Casan faced 28 batters in 7 2/3 innings (5 over the minimum)
-14 first pitch strikes (50%)
-Only two 3 ball counts (both went full)
-First 3 ball count was not until the 6th inning (strike out on full count for the 3rd out)
-One 3-0 count (last batter he ultimately walked on full count before being pulled in the 8th)
-Through the first 3 innings, his first pitch strike % was only 27% (3 for 11) and none of those counts went to 3 balls which is even more impressive
Plog
-only faced 1 batter but FWIW he did not throw a first pitch strike, fell behind 2-1, gave up the single and was pulled for Cowan
Cowan
-75% first pitch strike (3 for 4)
-the one AB he did not throw a first pitch strike flew out on pitch #2
-did not reach a 3 ball count
I know this data is probably readily available online somewhere, but I kind of enjoyed tracking all of this as the game went on. (My wife says I have to keep doing it since we finally pitched a good game with me tracking the stats).

I don't think that it is actually.
Thank you for this.

Nice job, but looks like you picked the wrong game to start unfortunately.

There's an approach angle to this that is hard to put into stats, I think. OU swung at a ton of balls last night, I feel like other teams have not given us that benefit. On the other hand, we took our asses off, sometimes to my frustration but also to a ton of walks.

i dream of one day charting pitches
i would love to just have the numbers in FB vs Breaking ball and when we throw them.
But I am usually watching while feeding a baby a bottle and rocking him to sleep or desperately trying to get reception in the black hole that is the knock knock museum

Evans has generated a high number of whiffs all season, which of course is related to his excellent stuff and is a good predictor to what eventually happened last night when it all comes together.

Skenes, for comparison had 1 game over 20 last year (21).

This is good stuff. Appreciate the info! Nice to see positive pitching stats. Guess I shouldn’t be surprised the first response was lame hate since this is the Rant after all.
I’d be interested to see the same charting for Evans’ start last week and how last nights metrics compare (or more correctly stated, how they contrast

A guy was walking across the Sinai. He sees a man leading a donkey with a woman and baby on it. he introduces himself and the guy says, “I’m Joseph, this is Mary, and the baby is…” At that the wanderer interrupts, “Don’t tell me; the baby is Jesus.” Joseph says, “Hell no, what do you think, I’m Puerto Rican?”

I know first pitch strikes are important for everyone, but i feel it is especially important for Cowan. It seems when he gets ahead, and is locating well he is much better at nibbling the edges of the strike zone and getting strikeouts and weak contact.

Wonder if you have this…how many of the first pitch strikes were takes versus swinging. Also how many were FB vs off speed. If a guy can locate first pitch off speed I always find they’re really effective the rest of the game. When it’s only FB it eventually leads to hits or walks.

It's here in the play by play, but it has to be manually counted LINK
In the play summary where it gives the pitch sequence, it should be K for looking and S for swinging.

Whenever you start getting into the nuts and bolts of baseball it becomes super enjoyable. Love it, and love that you did this. Please continue posting if you continue tracking.
We can save you a lot of time and make it simple though. Get ahead in counts, get hit less. Fall behind in counts, get hit. Over time you data will show that, but by all means keep doing it. I enjoy it. Thanks for posting.

There is a reason Batting averages rise when it’s a hitters count. It’s definitely not rocket science on what success looks like on the mound. One of the best things a pitcher can do when pitching to hitters in a hitters count is to throw something other than a fastball for a strike. Casan was able to do that last night with all of his pitches. Just image being a batter with a 3-0 or 3-1 count and you’re looking for that, right down the middle, fastball but instead get an off speed change up that drops 6-12 inches before crossing home plate.
