If so, what was it like? It seems like the weather would be the best of all worlds, especially by the coast. Not blistering hot in summer and not miserably cold in winter.

Also, the terrain is very diverse and looks like it would be both beautiful and fun.

Any of you ever live there?

I lived in the blue ridge mountains for several years and it was awesome. Virginia is beautiful and the four seasons were great. Never too hot or too cold. Culturally, still pretty southern in a lot of the state.

Close. I lived in Lewisburg WV. Beautiful town, and I loved having 4 seasons. Winter was cold and cloudy but I didn't mind it. Perfect summer Temps and low humidity made up for it.

I was there for college and agree with you. There’s a reason people go there to retire. Some fantastic properties, great views and hiking along Blue ridge, and it’s very accessible to DC along with still having southern charm. I plan to retire near there (or maybe NC or TN)

Umm. It’s blistering hot in the summer.

I’m a native Virginian and would return to the western part of the state. Democrats have pretty much ruined everything else.

Oh and frick NOVA

Lewisburg is home of the WV state fair, right?

Went there as a kid. It’s where I saw my first bobcat. They would have four of them digging big holes and then fill them right back up.

Avoid the coast, Richmond, and Nova, and it’s a great state. It would be even better without the blue DC spillover.

Four seasons, mountains, lakes.

I grew up there and loved it.

Weather is not as good as you imagine. Gets pretty hot in the middle of summer and you get snow/freezing in winter. Allergies/pollen are bad too.

The whole mountains on one side, ocean on the other is overrated. Most people rarely or never bother with the hassle of making those long car trips, especially when you can just hop a plane and go to much better beaches or mountains. That obviously doesn't apply if you actually live on the beach or Blue Ridge mountains.

The old "purple state" politics is also extremely overrated. They basically embrace the worst of both sides of the aisle. Some of that is based on the fact they border DC so a lot of political venom spills over and turns it into a hyper-charged battleground. Politics is front and center and it's ugly.

They are particularly Nazi-like when it comes to cars; the worst of any state in the union. Any ticket or traffic violation gets the book thrown at you - cracked taillight, roll through a stopsign, etc - bend over. And they have an outrageous property tax on cars - something like 5% every year. A lot of middle class people just drive beaters because they don't want to pay the Nazi regime $1,000 - 2,000 every year just for the pleasure of owning a car. And of course beaters tend to attract traffic tickets so we come around full circle.

The state has been flooded with illegal immigrants. I think over 10% of the population was now born outside the United States and it gets worse every year - by design. And these aren't just roofers and dishwashers from northern Mexico. They come from all over - Asia, Africa, random sh*thole, etc.

About the only two positives I can say are: (1) there's a little bit of everything if you value a diverse interest range and (2) there are some really good public universities if you have kids heading towards college.

If you're looking for something brackish in terms of the north/south divide, I think the area west of Appalachia is better - northern TN and Arkansas, Kentucky, southern Indiana and Ohio.

I have. Weather is fine, compared to BR and NOLA.

Live out there near West Va if you can.

Yeah. Unfortunately, VA has sh*t the bed and unrecognizable now. A shame.

Spent 2-1/2 years in VA Beach while in the Navy. Wasn’t that bad, had good neighbors. Everything was easily accessible.

Never lived there but I have been through many parts of it, particularly the Shenandoah and SW parts, but also Richmond and NVA. It's pretty liberal around NVA and DC, and pretty conservative elsewhere. It's a beautiful state, especially the western parts near I-81.

We've considered moving to SW Virginia. Used to like Winchester, but DC has kind of changing the character there.

Nope, but I did work up in Blacksburg for a couple of month one Autumn and really enjoyed it.

On weekends I spent time on the Blue Ridge Parkway and the mountains.
