Awesome spot. My friends and I vacationed there and I have an Aunt and Uncle that have a place on the lake.

Also have two good buddies who grew up in Richmond. They said it's nice and still have family there.

I always felt like Va Beach should be a great spot with its location, but think maybe it's got some of the same vibe/ills as the Dirty Myrtle.

ETA: The new governor certainly is taking things in an interesting direction. I anticipate we'll start to see an influx of their residents to SC as well now.

parts of it are great. the new concert venue there is incredibly nice. it suffers from the same issue(s) that plague Norfolk, Portsmouth, Hamption, Newport News, etc

Yeah. That part of the state seems awful. Too many progressives from Washington, D.C.

Never too hot or too cold.

DC summer humidity is pretty gross and the people are worse but as a state Virginia has some of the best geography in the country IMO.

That’s just the way it is.

As to the OP’s question, you’ll either like it or dislike it a lot.

What’s good about Virginia is great and what’s bad really sucks.

I wouldn’t recommend trying to do it on a budget.

And the southwestern corner is straight-up Appalachia.

I've lived in both NOVA and Norfolk. My parents and siblings all live in NOVA/Baltimore currently. No way on Earth I'd have moved back 15 years ago, let alone now.

South Carolina (Greenville area) is a politically neutral (red, but not hard red) territory that has pretty territory, and I don't recall it getting sweltering too often (hot yes, but not Houston/Baton Rouge levels of swamp arse.)

Northern Virginia is a different state entirely, stay away if you can. Richmond is pretty cool for a mid sized city. And out west towards 81 is still awesome and pretty rural. Virginia Beach is a shithole with trashy people. Very similar to Myrtle. Has its nice parts but most of it, no thanks.

Williamsburg is nice too.

Charlottesville is one of the best college towns in the country.

Roanoke is legit but there isn’t much to do out there except you’re close to Bristol for NASCAR and the Greenbrier.

That’s all I really got.

I lived in Newport News almost 60 years ago. Was stationed at Dam Neck Navel Station, Virginia Beach for at least a year.
Virginia is a multi featured state.
Beaches on the East, Mountains on the West and about every other feature in between.
The just elected a Commie Governor so I expect it will turn to shite soon.

I lived in the Shenandoah valley for three years. They don’t call it gods country for nothing. I loved having four real seasons, including developing a fondness for an actual winter. The heat in the summer is not the same as Alabama (or Louisiana I’m sure) I don’t care what anyone says. Appalachia is an interesting place.

I grew up in St Charles parish, lived here in VA since 2008...

Umm. It’s blistering hot in the summer.

On the worst days up here its like it is for the entire summer back home. But it doesn't stay that way for long, plus the humidity is lower so it actually cools down at night.

Virginia would be absolutely awesome if they'd just make NOVA its own state.

I live in the Virginia Beach area now. Lived here about 4 years. Beaches are OK, I prefer Sandbridge or Chics Beach, I avoid the touristy oceanfront area as much as possible, though the new concert venue there (The Dome) is nice. Also an easy drive down to OBX for a day or overnight trip, same with DC.

Winter weather can be hit or miss. It can be 30 or 60 degrees pretty much any given day. Last winter, we got 15 inches of snow here during a storm. This year? The most we got was maybe 2-3 inches from a storm and it all melted same day or overnight. Virginia is kind of all over the place with weather. I've experienced tropical storms, earthquakes, tornados and snowstorms here

Overall I like it, but I'd love to move closer to the mountains.

My biggest negatives here are the GD personal property taxes on vehicles that they make you pay here and the politics are all over the place. VA also has weird alcohol laws, technically, there are no "bars" in Virginia if I remember correctly.
