Went back and saw that there was 9 days between when Wade was fired and McMahon was hired. I remember it being incredibly rushed at the time.

Don’t remember any other candidates that were brought up.

Was he hired because no one else wanted it, because Woodward was lazy or both?

I vaguely remember seeing something about McMahon basically being a stop gap due to the investigation before they hired someone who can actually coach.

Even if that’s true, don’t think Woodward anticipated that both he and his football hire would be shown the door before McMahon.

Fat Scott was lazy and had no clue how to hire a basketball coach

Probably the only candidate that interviewed that didn’t give any pushback to Dictator Woodward

We threw the most money at the best resume we could. Matt was a hot name at that time.

Woody got duped.

We had 0 scholarship players coming back. He took over an empty roster.

By the way, I’m not defending him. He needs to go.

He did but he really didn't and years later that's no longer a concern.

McMahon was living off finding an unknown Ja Morant playing a pick up game in a South Carolina church gym.

I think he was hired because Scott didnt give a shite about basketball and knew that most of the fans didnt really care either. Baseball and Football hires are way more important at LSU.

The contract isn’t bad as buyouts go.

Just don’t think anyone thought that firing MM would be coming on the heels of a $54M buyout with Kelly either.

Be careful, don’t let this conversation drift into potential replacements and who we could pull away from another school, admins will quash that.

LSU wasn’t an attractive job with the NCAA investigation looming. The problem with hiring McMahon was his insane contract.

We should have just made Nickleberry interim until the investigation ended.

No, he was not the only option, not even close.

Everyone who wasn’t out of eligibility or leaving for the draft was still here after he was hired, the portal wasn’t even open yet and we did return scholarship players, 1 fewer than the previous season. McMahon even said if he’d needed to retain more guys he could’ve. We’ve also heard from “insiders” who support McMahon that he hated guys like Eric Gaines and wanted him gone ASAP.

MM was hired because he was a good coach at a smaller school who was willing to take the risk with what LSU was at the time.

Was not a bad hire on paper. It didn't work out.

McMahon was hired within days of Todd Golden, who was hire by Florida. McMahon had the better season than Golden and actually beat Golden in the NCAA Tournament.

The hire, on paper, wasn’t bad. But the problem his Woodward never looked beyond the paper to evaluate if the hire was the right fit at the right time in a changing era of college sports.

Another resume hire by Woodward. He was 0/2 in his 2 biggest hires. It is amazing some people are still mad he was fired even if you despise Landry he deserves credit for getting rid of Woodward and overhauling the LSU board . It would have been better to do it behind the scenes but that’s not how he operates at least the end result was good. If we can get WW back this will be best set of coaches in all sports that we have ever had .

Good summation. Not absolving Woodward because the contract has become a disaster. But it was probably necessary to land McMahon, who actually wasn't a bad candidate. When McMahon was hired, not too many people were saying he had only been successful because of Ja Morant. And he had won a game in two different NCAA tournaments while with Murray State. Pretty good candidate, on paper.

I know people find this hard to believe, but from coaching to hiring, sometimes coaches and administrators make a choice that's good and reasonable that, in hindsight, just doesn't work out.

And I'm not in the camp that he deserves to come back next year. It hasn't worked out here, and won't work out here.

This. Good take.
