This is really the problem. McMahon had an adequate resume. For all of his on the court faults that people can find with him, I think that a bigger issue has been the revolving door of our more quality underclassman. It might be because of NIL, or lack of connection with players, but McMahon hasn’t done what needs to be done to retain guys and build enough depth to compete.

What’s crazy about Morant is that McMahon didn’t recruit him or see him play before offering him. An assistant saw him at a camp, called McMahon, said we need to offer this kid and McMahon said do it.

No idea, not to beat a dead horse but Woodward should have given the NCAA the finger and supported WW.

We’ve also heard from “insiders” who support McMahon that he hated guys like Eric Gaines and wanted him gone ASAP.

In fairness, Wade was often sick of Gaines’ attitude

But the problem his Woodward never looked beyond the paper to evaluate if the hire was the right fit at the right time in a changing era of college sports.

So why don't you tell us exactly what he should have looked at " beyond the papers" that would have told us why he might not be the best hire? Do you think there is some hidden clue that would tell how a coach might respond when his best two players are lost to season ending injuries two years in a row?

As to the changing landscape I believe you may be on to something but not in the way you think. I believe with the NCAA cloud hanging over the whole LSU athletic department and facing possible draconian sanctions and institutional control investigation McMahon was told to not do anything remotely close to improper recruitment. He was given a longer contract under the premise it might take longer to get a program in place but he could build and develop a quality program over 3 to 4 years. Then the whole NIL / immediate transfer eligibility blew up and the program was under funded to attract high level players. There was little margin and the injuries destroyed any chance for success. The alleged violations under Wade were now permissible and they were caught unprepared.

The hire was similar to John Brady some 25 years before. LSU was a tainted job due to NCAA witch hunts and very few established big program coaches would have left their school to come here. That’s a recipe for a Mid-major or a quad 3-4 school every time.

By the way, after watching lots of hoops this weekend, LSU needs to let their students move to the lower level behind the benches. Too many of those seats are taken by old namby pamby blue-haired hens and their feeble husbands.

They were there and stopped showing up. Even with halfway decent teams. This was in the Brady era.

Fat Woody should have looked at MM entire coaching career at Murray st. He was the only coach of like the previous 5 coaches to have losing record, and all those coaches when on to bigger jobs! If Woody would have taken a good look at MM seasons at Murray st. He would have seen MM had about 3 seasons where he had good years the rest were not that good. He then should have looked elsewhere!

There was talk about Todd Golden as well. Florida hired Golden March 18th, 2022 and LSU hired Mcmahon three days later on the 21st.

Even then you could tell Mcmahon was going to turn out awful.

This board would have been in full melt in 2022 if Woodward hired Golden over McMahon. McMahon inherited a moribund program facing NCAA probation and an empty roster and has had his best two players lost to season ending injuries the past two seasons.

Golden inherited a solid program from Mike White and has not lost key players to injury and under no investigation.

Tood Golden

Naw…

Imo, interviewed and won the interview. Who all was interviewed, descent question…?

Don’t think he ever had freedom in recruiting. Hasn’t had more than 2 real guards any year, LSU has to fall on the sword instead of a new contract if he doesn’t want 4 or 5 guards at all times.

Can’t blame a coach to get an extension and not run his recruiting.

You're full of shite.

It was easy to see Golden was the better option and LSU let Florida ride in and take him with little to no effort put in to hire him. As soon as Golden was no longer a possibility, Mcmahon was hired instantly.

As the hire was made it still felt like a major loss for LSU. You hosed Will Wade. You had the opportunity to get, what looked like, a great replacement, and you ended up with Mcmahon.

It was easy to see that most of his head coaching success came from an unbelievable college player in Ja Morant.

In his one truly great season without Ja, 2021-2022, the team rode KJ Williams' historic season and played some ugly/defensive basketball at times.

But you do you man. Keep acting like everyone else is crazy when they call Matt Mcmahon what he truly is, a joke.
