Hannah Henry, who won the 2017 and 2018 USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championships while helping the Arizona State Sun Devils take the team titles, was killed by a driver last Sunday while riding her bicycle in Phoenix.
According to news reports, the 26-year-old Canadian was riding in a designated bike lane when 46-year-old Eric Hodge ran her over in a van, drove onto the sidewalk, and then fled the scene. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene of the collision, where Phoenix Fire Department pronounced Henry dead at the scene.
Video from the scene enabled police to identify the make and model of the van, and found it parked at a home. Police officers knocked on the door of the home, and the van’s registered owner answered the door, stating that his friend was driving the vehicle at the time. According to police reports, the registered owner asked Hodge to come outside to speak with police, but Hodge attempted to escape through the rear of the home. Officers quickly caught Hodge.
According to court documents, Hodge admitted to smoking fentanyl before he got in the van that morning. He told police that “when he smokes fentanyl, he passes out randomly and wakes up in different places.” Hodge also apparently recalled seeing “a girl on a 10-speed bicycle” shortly before the collision that took Henry’s life, but thought that he had hit a fire hydrant and not a person. He allegedly then proceeded to buy $100 of fentanyl before parking the van.

Poor girl. I've basically given up on riding on the road. Between distracted drivers, druggies, and people who are flat out aggressive towards bikes, it's not safe to be out there anymore.

It's why I ended up with Peloton (plus it's so hot here), but I really miss it. I halfway shopping for a new road bike currently but doubt if I will purchase one this year. I have not done any tris since before moving to Alaska, but I want to get back into it next year so I need to start working on a base.

Every time I pass a biker, I wonder why they are doing that because nowadays with every driver distracted there is no way in hell I would do that

That’s why when I run, I do it facing traffic and hop in the grass when a car is coming.

Same thing with kids riding bicycles on neighborhood streets.

Good decision Lance Armstrong. And can we just put this guy who killed her in a wood chipper and be done? Damn, the POS, who will never contra damn thing to society killed a young, innocent girl who had already achieved so much.
It’s time we brought back institutions and our all the crazy but I s and junkies in there and remove them from society. You want to ruin your life? Fine! But you can’t be around other people.

Such a shame
You can be so healthy and making the right choices and then some smooth brained fentanyl addict smokes up and runs you over in the road and doesn’t even know it and continues on to buy more fentanyl

Yep.
Buddy of mine wanted me to do the MS150 with him a few years ago. No big deal, I told myself. I’d train with my mountain bike then just borrow one of his road bikes.
While riding my bike the first few mornings, I couldn’t get out of my head that some morons drive down the freeway at 80 mph looking at their phones. Running, being able to see what’s about to hit me, is more my preference.
