Is yours?

The first ones started appearing in numbers years ago.

What demand drives the construction of these places?

I think it finally caught on as “easy money” types of businesses. Same with the “ice for pay” machines around towns.

Self-storage sites are like so-called title loan places; if a bunch of them start showing up, your part of town is in trouble.

Well, is there demand to fill them?

Americans owning way too much crap and not being willing to throw it away. Also, Gen Zers who have to rent and don't have room for all the crap they don't need.

I think Carlin had a good bit on this.

We have houses for our shite......then when our living area can't take the shite, we have attics and garages.....then when we fill those up we rent places to put our shite. We love collecting shite.....and we can't part with our shite

They're going up left and right in my part of Houston. Which is shocking because it's far from cheap real estate. But I guess all the 4000sqft mcmansions going up where bungalows used to be is full of people who have too much crap even for their giant houses.

And i'm part of the problem. We have one.

People often pay more to store their junk than the junk is worth.

I like to pay $900/year to store ~$800 worth of stuff.

It seems others do too.

My theory is divorce rates increasing and a lot of people going from single family homes to apartments.

Been watching a self storage place get constructed not far from my house. It’s probably going on 7 months since they started the initial dirt work. It’s one of those multi-level air conditioned storage places with outside bigger units that are not. I can only imagine how upside down this place is for the owner after seeing how long and jacked up it has been in the construction process.

I'm probably not far from that. I keep all our seasonal decorations there because my attic sucks. And we're storing some extra furniture for when we buy a mountain house next year.

I like those. Also wonder if Boomers selling house and going to apartments / assisted living is part of it.

Two storage places have closed near me. One was torn down & the other converted to office space.

The newer climate controlled storage places are putting the older ones out of business.

Same here. Guy I work with owns a couple of them. Guy prints money. Says it’s the easiest money you can get. All automated. Can’t believe there’s that kind of demand for them but apparently there is. Pretty crazy.

The flatfoots at the IRS ain’t dummies. They set up cameras to measure traffic in/out and utilities to get metrics.

I know folks who found out the hard way.
