Josh Pate has a pretty good way to fix the calendar and bowl season…

What say ye

Rose bowl gonna be pissy but this would be a good idea.

Finals may make timing alittle off also.

I’d be good with the Rose Bowl getting the championship every year, then bidding out the semis to any city and making his bowl datapoints a combination of the peach bowl, sugar bowl, cotton bowl, orange bowl, etc

It’s a beautiful idea that will never get any traction because the NCAA is filled with useless individuals who couldn’t solve a second grade math problem

This is the best solution.

Ever been? It's beautiful, yes. Not worthy of hosting the NCG every year. It should rotate as it does. I just wish we could figure out how to play it on a Saturday and tell the NFL to take a hike. Monday night sucks.

Awesome idea that likely never happens.
He said it himself.. someone with the NCAA would have to approach the NFL and discuss the December viewing windows and not sure who is going to do that.

The NCAA is dickless and all the conference commissioners are in it for their conference and not the sport on whole.

His solution is start a week earlier, the potential playoff teams play in extra games that are defacto playoff games, then start the playoffs.

I wouldn’t be opposed to starting earlier, but I don’t understand the need for conference title games anymore. The conferences are too big to have the best 2 play, and it becomes pointless for both winner and loser unless you are on the bubble for the playoffs (BYU, Georgia Tech). So, I’d rather change conference title week to first round of playoffs, played on campus. Second round played on campus. Then semifinals rotate among the NY6, and finally national title game as a plus 1.

Then i’d make sure the portal doesn’t open for anyone until February, meaning transfers occur after spring opposed to mad dash for the start of spring.

Sadly, my idea or Pates will never happen. The chaos is preferred over the fix.

no way...Superdome/Sugar Bowl is a better venue for fans than any other venue...it always needs to be in the rotation.

Solid plan but he doesn’t address what to do with the NY6 bowl games which are a major thorn in the system right now since he moved the second round on campus too.

I love the idea of starting earlier and removing CCG altogether. Fully agree they're pointless, especially with a larger playoff field. The entire approach as you mentioned is quite solid IMO.

NO NOTES.

Break up the superconferences and bring back the OG bowl tie ins.

Have a plus one a week after the bowls.

Rose Bowl is the best bet for a Saturday game against the NFL because unlike all of the other sites in the rotation, no NFL team plays there. The championship games are played on Monday, for sure because of TV, but you can't discount stadium availability for potential NFL home playoff games. That said, wrap it up before the NFL regular season is over and angle for the Saturday of week 18 as the NCG.

Hopefully with UCLA getting a new stadium the Rose Bowl starts to lose some of its power

That's basically just a playoff expansion, also playing 6 bowls in November doesn't save bowl season the way he claims.

Why do we care so much about saving the bowls?

Just let them die and play playoff games on campus until final four.

The easy fix is the one that unfortunately no one would never go for

Open the portal Feb 1. That eliminates the need for coaches to even consider leaving jobs in season, and puts all teams on an even playing field in regards to those that go on deep playoff runs.

New players show up in summer like they almost always did up to a few years ago

Losing spring practice is the "price" of transferring

it will never happen because it's somewhat of a negative outcome, and as we've seen lately anything that even resembles a negative outcome for players is considered illegal and not tolerable.

I agree with everything he said…

Except I’d simply remove that conference championships / bowl weekend over Thanksgiving and make it a bye. It’s not needed; and logistically could be a nightmare for a few different reasons. I also think it’d be better to just give all teams one week off (only 14 days, not 24-31 days for the teams with byes like now) before an intense and condensed playoff. Conferences can either award co-champions or use a tiebreaker if they want to award one champ, no CCG needed.

Top 16 teams, no autobids. If you’re not one of the top 16 (especially without autobids) after 12 regular season games, you don’t need / deserve the opportunity to “play yourself in” via a random bowl.

But as far as the rest goes, I pretty much agree with him:

1) Move the season up a week.

2) Regular Season ends the weekend before Thanksgiving.

3) First Round on campus first weekend of Dec (two games Friday night, then 2 in each of the Saturday time slots).

4) Quarterfinals next weekend on campus (one Friday night / each Saturday time slot). You might need to do these at the major bowls, to have them play along.

5) Semis next Saturday afternoon/evening at the major bowls.

6) Championship at 4 pm on New Years Day.

Any bowl eligible team that doesn’t make the CFP can still play in the minor bowls in December.
