Sony has announced plans to spin off its TV hardware business, shifting it to a new joint venture with TCL. The two companies have signed a nonbinding agreement for Sony’s home entertainment business, with TCL set to hold a 51 percent stake in the new venture and Sony holding 49 percent.

quote:

With this partnership, TCL is elevating itself into the premium television landscape after innovating with technology over the last few years. If the deal goes through it would mark the end of an era for Sony, and could open the door for cheaper Bravia TVs built with excellent Sony image processing and leading TCL tech.

quote:

The new company is expected to retain “Sony” and “Bravia” branding for its future products and will handle global operations from product development and design to manufacturing, sales, and logistics for TVs and home audio equipment. Sony says that the partnership will leverage Sony’s picture and audio tech, brand value, supply chain management, and other operational expertise. This will combine with TCL’s own display technology, vertical supply chain strength, global market presence, and end-to-end cost efficiency.

Translation: Margins on TV's have gotten to small to be profitable.

Makes sense, Sony has always been way overpriced for the same tech. Very little profit margin for Sony with such low sales compared to the others, was always a matter of time.

Low profit + low sales numbers = inevitable merge.

I've always had Sony TVs. After the merger I will have to see if the quality falls off a cliff or stays the same. Sony is top tier when it comes to image processing and picture quality.

TCL picture is OK relative to the market but it isn't at the top. Their bigger issue is quality. About 4 years ago Costco completely stopped selling TCL due to sheer volume of warranty claims they were covering. That was back when Costco was backing that extended warranty themselves.

Now they have brought in allstate (if I remember right) to provide the extended warranty automatically included for all electronics purchases and Costco and have restored selling TCL since they are no longer on the hook for the cost of failures.

terrible.

Exactly. TCL makes a good TV but China is asshoe.
Apparently the world learned nothing relative to Covid 19 which was knowingly spread throughout the world by the Chinese government after which they horded masks needed throughout the world. China is also not cooperating with an ongoing investigation into the source of the virus and its spread.

Well this sucks. I have 2 Sony tvs both A80J OLED and the picture is the awesome. Still about as good as it gets and the TVs are probably 5 years old.

Guess I'll have to get a Bravia 8 before this happens.

Costco has a lot of trashy customers that act like women wearing a dress and returning it 364 days later.

They make it too easy. I’ve only returned one thing in my life and it was this $600 all in one tineco mop/vacuum thing for the wife.

It was 5-6 months out, used, and no questions asked and I had to make the take the little bonus dust buster thing it came with as they didn’t seem to want it.

We dropped our membership that year though because other than returns, that place is a disaster.

Toshiba went this route letting Hisense sell and manufacture their TVs a few years back. There are slight differences but you can tell they are using similar form factors now.

Average person won’t notice it, but techies will see it.

After the 2016 flood, I went with a then top-of-the-line Sony Bravia TV in 2017. When I go to Best Buy, I wander through their high end TV's and give Sonys and LG OLED's my own "eye test" and compare the picture of each brand. Until now, I've found them to be practically identical.

Maybe this is psychological on my part, but with TCL taking over Sony, when my existing TV fails, I will only choose a high end LG OLED as a replacement.

Checks out. Up until recently LG was making all of Sony’s OLED panels .
