105 Scholarship Players

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t everyone (including the SEC) move to 105 Scholarship players next season. No more walk-ons. If that’s the case, and I’ve got my numbers right, we’ve got room for roughly 30-35 players out of the portal as of this moment. That number is only going to continue to grow as guys hit the portal/declare for the draft.

Doesn't mean we actually hit 105. If you slice up the revenue sharing into more pieces, then everyone gets a smaller cut. We still have to balance the money with actual production.

Yea I can't really see a reason why we would need 105 players in this era

I'm all about walk-ons getting scholarships. I think everyone on the team that puts the work in and represents LSU deserves a scholarship.
At the same time, assuming room and board at LSU is $50k/ year, adding 20 more scholarship players would cost the university and athletic department an additional $1,000,000/ year. Our financials just revealed we're $800k in the red for 2025.

I could be wrong but didn't the SEC put out a policy limiting it to 95?

True. I noticed scholarships were something like a $17,000,000 expense. I wouldn't really view that as a "direct expense" as much as just lost or unrealized revenue.
I don't think LSU would otherwise fill those other non football scholarships with students paying full tuition to realize that, but I could be wrong.

Yea no chance in hell we actually get to 105 this year. Nor do I think it’s necessary or even advisable to do so.

I could be wrong, but I can't imagine more than 60-70 a year even recording a snap.

I agree. If LSU or any other school wants to give out 105 scholarships out of the goodness of their hearts, fine. But strictly related to football contributions, I say the number should be about 95. That is more than 4 players for every position on the team. Also, from the players point of view, why in the hell would you want to be 5th string at LSU if you could say be 2nd or 3rd string somewhere else. I guess if you just want to go to LSU free that is one thing. But being 98th on the scholarship list or whatever means you will never see the field...unless it is from the bench. Also, there used to a limit on the number you could dress out for home and fewer for away games. Did they do away with that restriction?

The only way I see us getting anywhere close to 105 is if we start recruiting more Chad Jones types - Football & baseball studs

Many coaches want 105 for all kinds of practice situations. There needs to be three or four backups for every position.

All 85 scholarships were fully endowed. So they don’t cost anything the money is invested. Maybe 20 more spots will open up for endowments.

We do not have the budget.

Correct. The kicker, however, is that the money cost for each of those "extra" scholarships count towards each schools piece of the lawsuit damages pie. That pie is non negotiable as in has to be paid. As much as those numbers are about depth, they are just as much about paying each schools share of the lawsuit damages. Then we get to the complications that will arise because of the outdated title 9 requirements. I doubt we ever get to 105.

Does room and board, cost of tuition and books, healthcare, and a stipend of monthly expenses count as a payment?
Some players are not offered big bucks, but some players still value an education. I know I would, even if all I did was a practice squad player for four years and graduated from LSU.

The athletic dept has to pay the university tuition and fees any player owes.

I think what's driving this is going to 9 conference games. The extra depth will come in handy.
That being said, I think the roster size of 105 is still too small to do what is needed.
Coach Neuheisel once said on Full Ride that he felt he needed somewhere around a full roster strength of 120 (including walk-ons) to allow for injuries, scout teams, and the like.
