Are hockey players the only athletes that want to play?

NBA players need their precious rest, all star games are dead, bowls are dead. It’s an issue plaguing college football, NBA, MLB, NFL, and college hoops…at minimum.
With football, I understand that the risk, especially with our knowledge of CTE, is an issue. You don’t want to slam your head into your opponent if you don’t have to. Fine…
If that’s the case though, why not just opt out once your team is 4-4 or something? In the NFL, why bother playing once you’re off to a 2-7 start? Everyone else seems to fold up and go home.
The 4 Nations tournament in hockey showed me a BIG difference between the mentality of the athletes across various sports. Dudes were playing hurt in a “meaningless exhibition”.

This is why I like rugby. I think it still retains some of what football used to be in the 70s or whenever.
I’m sure that over time it will be ruined just like all money sports.
In the meantime, check out this little nut job:

Dude nfl players pretty much are never healthy
Just some fun ones :
Romo played with a broken rib rubbing on his lung
Ej Manuel would get shots on his ribs every game to play through the pain, eventually the needle collapsed his lung….
I’d say maybe 5% of players aren’t playing through something
The dudes are modern day freaking gladiators

Money makes you soft.
Pay NHL players like NBA players and their desire to play exhibition games and shite like that would plummet.
The highest paid NHL player made less than Lonzo Ball last year
A LOT less.

Best athletes on the planet…

It really does feel like the mindset has changed across a lot of sports. Once playoff hopes are gone, the urgency just disappears for some leagues, while hockey still seems to carry that “play no matter what” culture. The contrast during the 4 Nations tournament was pretty striking.

Carson Wentz was out there playing with his shoulder absolutely fricked and landing on it.
The NBA just needs to space out the games more. The number of players resting games is up but so is the number of injuries. Its like bodies cant handle the pace/intensity for a full season for a lot of games.

All i know is hockey is fun to watch and there are no yellow flippin flags slowing the game. The NFL has become a snooze fest and the NBA is a 3-point competition

I'll preface this by saying youth/amateur athletics and professional athletics are galaxies apart...but I remember being excited about practice as a kid. Didn't matter what kind of practice. Baseball, football, basketball I looked forward to practicing because it was a chance to play, and I at the end of the day I was on a team because I enjoyed playing the game.
It's turned into maximizing value for yourself, which again I understand to an extent if it's your job..but it's still hard for me to comprehend that these guys that have played for fun all their lives are all of the sudden looking for any reason to not play.

The correct answer to the OP is YES. As a whole, they are the best athletes in the world on top of being the toughest athletes. I am watching more NHL now than I ever have, and I watched it a lot prior to this year.

Or that the type of play and lack of off season conditioning is resulting in weaker bodies

I don’t hear of too many “resting” issues in the nfl outside of the last week of the regular season which isn’t that big of a deal

NFL players are the best athletes and it isn’t particularly close. Their size , power, quickness measurements are off the charts
They are also the most physical and tough as well

Spot on. Plus they don’t go to three minutes of commercials after every goal.

Football has a 100 percent injury rate. But guess what? So does hockey. 82 games in an NHL season. Plus playoffs. You’re going to get hurt.
The best decision I ever made as a sports fan was to triple my hockey watching and half my NFL watching. I don’t even bother with the NBA.
Just pick a team. Try it for a week. Just be into it for one week. You’ll come back for more.

quote:I think it was Tiki Barber who once said something like "You at least tweak something in the pre-season (if not actually injure it) and it's with you for the entire year. Anyone who tells you they are healthy in Week 9 is just lying".

I remember him from the World Cup.... he's fearless for his size!
I was fortunate to be in London when England played the New Zealand All Blacks at Twickenham Stadium and watched one of the all-time greats, Jonah Lomu. He was big, fast and fearless.... he's 6'5" 275 lbs. and ran the 100 meters at 10.7 seconds! Here's some highlights of Lomu at a few World Cups:

In hockey you don't make it to the pro level unless you really love the game. The way the system is set up through midget and Junior hockey weeds out players who are playing for any other reason other than love of the game.
In fact, it's a pretty standard question a coach will ask a player when scouting/recruiting him, "why do you play the game?" If the answer is anything other than "because I love it" that's a red flag.
Hockey players will play anytime anywhere and play for their teammates. It's just the culture of the sport.
