Crazy numbers for Penn State. Didn't think they'd go that high.

Don’t think they had a choice. Seller’s market and didn’t want to risk the internal promotion.

Its kinda of crazy considering he was like their 8th choice and still having to pay premium market value.

conservative PSU no its not. They went up a full 1.5 million or so to land a coach who isnt really any different than Franklin. Weird situation for PSU. Thats around 12 million more over 8yrs than Franklin was getting.

Pretty sure that’s about what they were paying Franklin. I’m not convinced Campbell was the right coach to drop the bag on, but I guess we’ll see.

His name came up for every major coaching job the last 6-8 years or so and he never landed one. I really think Penn State is looking for another new coach in 3 years.

Campbell is a better coach than Franklin, but without the drama. He didn't take some high profile jobs because he wasn't ready to move; not because he wasn't highly, highly coveted.

LSU made it an expensive year to look for a coach for everyone

The problem with Penn State (fans) is they think they are equal to Ohio State. Maybe in the 70s and 80s but that ship sailed.

They fired Franklin and their plan seemed to be "We are Penn State, we'll get our top choice". After getting far down their list, they were VERY LUCKY to get Campbell.

Maybe it works out, or maybe it looks like a gigantic mismanaged coaching mess.

I sorry to all the Franklin homers but I think Campbell is a fantastic hire for PSU.

that part

Campbell is one of the best HCs in CFB, and truly unique in his approach - if memory serves he acts as his own agent and is a real student of the business side of the sport

i would also assume he demanded total control over all aspects of the program

i wouldn’t be surprised is they were right back in the CFP mix despite their awful ESD this week

Drinkwitz makes more at Missouri. Think about that. Penn State is a much larger program than Mizzou, and they are throwing around d that kind of money.

They are getting the money from the Big 10, why would they not spend it on coaches? In fact, the Big 10 should mandate they spend it.

His agent knows PSU was desperate.

And after the disaster of a signing day that PSU had, good luck trying to get a coach to go there right now on an incentive-heavy “prove it” type deal. They’re paying for botching the entire hiring process

$13.5 million is the high water mark. $14 or $15 million is right around the corner when Lane wins the CFP Championship.

Matt Campbell was the only thing standing between them and hiring Brian Daboll.
