Is grass finished beef worth the extra cost?

Well forget the cost for a second
Local HEB near me has 93/7 grass fed beef ($9.99/lb) and they also have 96/4 ($8.16/lb) that isn't
Since I'm trying to cut I assume I'd be better off just going with the better cutting macros - the 96/4
The grass fed has a better fatty acid profile. Is that worth the extra calories?

It doesn't taste as good but definitely better for you. I'll leave it up to you to determine if more expensive for not as good tasting food is worth it

Too pricey for me but if you’ve got the $$, roll with it, much more nutrients & better fats. I buy the Costco 10# chubs of 93/7 for $5/lb, it’s a great deal.

It's 6.32 at Sam's for ground beef (3lb pack). Strip is $14.48/lb. Don't be scared of good fat, you'll eat less.
To me, it's worth the marginal cost over buying Acai smoothies and crap like that. Good eggs, butter, meat, you're 90% of the way there.

It depends on a lot of things.
Grass fed/grass finished beef will generally have a better fat content than grass fed/grain finished cows and will almost always have a better fat content than grain fed/grain finished cows.
Grass Fed is leaner
Grass fed has more Conjugated linoleic acid
Grass Fed has more polyunsaturated fat
Grass Fed has 2x as much Vitamin E and other fat soluble vitamins
It should be worth noting, Grass Fed beef tastes worse. I haven't met anyone that disagrees. A Grain Fed cow will be way more delicious. But in terms of nutrition, there's no argument.

:raises hand: I don’t know, maybe it’s that I haven’t done a blind tasting, or that I’ve just been generally eating grass-fed for a while, but I don’t agree with the “tastes worse” thing. I think it depends on what you’re accustomed to.

The cows, yes. But in this instance, no.

This is sort of where I'm wondering if the increased calorie trade off is worth it for the CLA

Certainly worth considering as well

imo no. sure its got a better fat profile but not enough imo to make a significant difference.

Seems like a CLA supplement would fill the gap there if it were that important

Agreed.
If you can handle elk, lamb, etc then you should handle the taste of grass fed beef imo

Actress Kristen Schaal grew up on a CO cattle ranch. When she was on the WTF podcast, she was asked if they ever ate the cattle. She said not usually, but once a cow had to be put down before it was ready to go to the slaughterhouse, and they butchered it to eat.
She said something like, "But the meat wasn't any good because it was grass fed."
I thought that was funny as hell, with many often paying a premium for grass fed. Even a cattle rancher wanted some grain finished beef.

This is a question a lot of people ask. The short answer is no...not really. I have no expertise in the matter other than I have looked into this question a great bit and have done my own research.
Sacred Cows: The Case for (Better) Meat: Why Well-Raised Meat Is Good for You and Good for the Planet
By Diana Rogers and Robb Wolf
The above book jumps into this subject in a pretty easy and understandable manner. A pretty small book as well so it is quick to get through. It is available on Audible if you prefer to listen to it, or there was also a Joe Rogan episode in which the authors were both on explaining the topic.
The TLDR version regarding their topic is that yes, grass finished beef has a better nutrient profile, but it's not as wide a gap as some people might expect. Their opinion is that beef is one of the best sources of protein out their period. Buy the beef that you can afford and that should be good enough.
The authors did some third party testing on their own and this helped inform some of their opinions.
Link below is an Amazon Link to the the book.

It generally is leaner than grain fed.
I think corn fed beef tastes much better. I think the difference is probably minimal

That sounds gay.

This is just not true. It tastes, different.
Grass fed has a much stronger flavor like a dry aged steak.
I much prefer grass fed and it is all that we eat. You have to make sure that you're actually buying true grass fed/finished or it's not worth the price.

Saying worse makes it sound like it's no good. I think it's just different like a different cut of meat. HEB's grass fed strip is pretty darn good for a strip.
