Remember last year everyone was seeing drones all over the place.

Seemed like a lot were centered around the north east? They were all over with no good explanation. The White House even had a press confessor them saying they were just normal.
Have they gone away? Havnt heard anything since then.

The vast majority had extremely simple explanations.. they were just normal airplanes that people were calling “drones” on Twitter.
There were reports of incursions by actual drones in some restricted airspace around military bases, which started the whole thing. AFAIK those have not been addressed since then. Which I don’t think is terribly surprising, especially if it actually was some sort of foreign espionage operation. (ETA: Or a US military operation, for that matter.)
But then society went batshit crazy and started calling everything in the sky “drones.” It’s a fascinating case study in internet groupthink / mass paranoia. Part of me wonders if the whole thing was some giant twisted social experiment, or if the trolls of the world all just happened to capitalize on the opening.
Regardless that whole ordeal has shattered whatever remaining hope I had for human critical thinking. If trolls can convince thousands of people that a fricking helicopter or 737 with navigation lights is some sort of alien craft, imagine what’s possible with generative AI and legit manipulation of social media algorithms. We’re fricked.

Most of the videos were fake and/or old, and a lot of people who had never looked up at night began to learn just how many planes we have above us at any given time.
That, or it was the Iranian drone mothership that was parked off our east coast.

They did a press release several months back and admitted it was a DoD contractor doing some development testing. Kind of pissed me off it took so long.
