Elon Musk just said in 15-20 years work will be "optional" (don't shoot the messenger)

Live on stage at the US Saudi Investment Forum.
Imagine how different your life would be if work was "optional" and how many people tie their identity to what they do for work.

This is not a good thing. Work gives most of us meaning, and we are supposed to be providing services in our society.
We need a limit to AI and what we ALLOW it to do. Just because it can do something doesn't mean we have to let it.

[people tie their identity to what they do for work]
I can’t understand that way of thinking at all. My job is less than 1% of who I am and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

So did he say what type of socialist system he will be setting up?

I already plan on work being optional for me in 20 years

Tesla still doesnt have level 4 autonomous driving and he said they would a decade ago.

That’ll be great. He’ll have more time for his kids

Wish it was 15-20 months. Or weeks. Days?

Work is already optional.
Take a look at my cousin. He's broke, don't do shite.

He's not wrong, we are using AI in ways that I didn't think we would be. In 15-20 years I'll be looking to retire.
But I'm wondering how my kids will flourish and develop in this environment.

Rampant alcoholism and drug abuse as a consequence.

Do most people really feel this way?
Family gives me purpose, friends give me purpose, work is a means to make money for me. Nothing more, nothing less.

with no purpose, society will collapse.
Posted on 11/19/25 at 10:25 am to sidewalkside
So exactly where will this be coming from?
Posted on 11/19/25 at 10:25 am to sidewalkside
That doesn’t make any sense. How will it be optional if AI can do everything?
Either AI won’t be able to do everything, in which case work won’t be optional, at least for those jobs AI can’t replace.
Or AI will be able to do everything, in which case no one will work, we’ll all be allocated a government decided stipend, and the proverbial ladder will be forever pulled up. You better hope that you or your parents have made a decent nest egg by then. Therefore there will be no option to work because who would hire a human?
I suppose what he’s saying is you can take up some sort of hobby, like carpentry or painting, and hope people pay for your product instead of AI’s product.
Of course Elon also said we would be on Mars by 2035 and he would build a network of super trains underground like 5 years ago. Elon says a lot of shite and some of it comes true
