John Beam, coach from Netflix’s ‘Last Chance U,’ shot on Oakland campus
Beam’s role as coach of the Laney College Eagles saw him featured heavily in the Netflix documentary series “Last Chance U,” which showcased the Oakland football team.
Authorities are asking the public for help in identifying a potential suspect in the case.
The shooting occurred around noon on Thursday at Laney College in the Laney Field House, the Peralta Community College District said in a statement. The school district did not name the victim, citing privacy reasons, but said a senior member of staff from the athletic department had been taken to hospital following the incident.
Police placed the college campus into lockdown, however the threat from a shooter is no longer active, the district said. It described the shooting as a “frightening moment for our community” and said it was working with authorities to ensure the campus remains safe.
Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee (D) confirmed Beam had been shot in a post on social media. “The last two days have been incredibly heavy for our city,” she said, noting it was the “second shooting on an Oakland campus in two days.”

Damn I hope he is ok.
He’s the last one out of the 3 I would have thought someone would shoot at.

He's too busy feuding with Mina Kimes, unless Mina gets fed up and shoots him.

I lived in Oakland for many years. He won championships at Skyline High in Oakland and then at Laney. He has
sent 20 players to the NFL during his decades-long coaching career. The man is a legend and beloved by many. Get well, coach.

Just reporting on Fox News that he died. So sad, and pointless.

Very tragic! I really enjoyed watching him on Last Chance U! Seemed like an amazing man.

That’s awful. So fricking tragic and senseless.
And the dipshits in Oakland wonder why nobody wants anything to do with their shite arse city. Because good, honest men that are pillars in their community making a positive influence on young men are gunned down.

It was a great show, almost impossible not to get hooked on it, even if you are a non sports fan.
