The price of turkeys is soaring this Thanksgiving, and experts say consumers will have to hunt around to find a bargain for those birds.

Driving the price hikes is a stressed turkey supply chain.

The U.S. turkey flock has dropped to its lowest size in nearly 40 years
because of the highly pathogenic avian influenza, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation.

As a result, wholesale turkey prices have surged 75% since October 2024, according to an analysis by the Purdue University College of Agriculture.

Wholesale turkey prices averaged 94 cents per pound at that point last year, compared with $1.71 per pound last month, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data.

Purdue University’s model predicts that the average retail price of a turkey will be approximately $2.05 per pound in November, which is 25% higher than a year ago, costing consumers about $31 for a 15-pound bird.

Purdue analysts emphasized that the actual retail price range of turkeys is wide because of differences in quality — organic or pasture-raised turkeys cost more.

The timing of the turkey orders by retailers also is critical in determining price.

Walmart is offering a dinner bundle, which includes a 16-pound turkey and sides, for under $56 for 10 people.

A Thanksgiving bundle from Aldi’s sells for $40 and feeds 10 people. Amazon is offering its own Thanksgiving dinner promotion for $25. Target on Wednesday announced a $20 Thanksgiving deal for four.

Other grocers, such as ShopRite and Foodtown, are offering customers a free 10-to-20-pound store-brand turkey if they spend $400 by Thanksgiving. BJ’s is running a similar promotion for $150.

Wells Fargo’s annual Thanksgiving food report shows that the typical cost of a turkey dinner for consumers is higher than those deals. A holiday menu that uses all store-brand items costs $80, while a menu with all national name brands totals $95, Wells Fargo’s report said.

I bought a 7lb bone in turkey breasts 2 weeks ago for $.99/lb. Bought 2 of them.
Didn't have to hunt too hard for that bargain.

these threads about grocery store prices are always hilarious. We live in a gigantic fricking country. You can buy the same chicken breasts at 5 different stores just in Baton Rouge and pay 5 different prices. Averaging out the price of a certain meat for the whole country is just stupid. You want to be lazy and pay ridiculous prices for groceries, that's on you.

I also bought a 10b ham for $.99/lb
24lbs of meat for Thanksgiving for $24. We'll probably spend maybe $25 on sides (green beans, peas, mac & cheese, sweet potato casserole, rice dressing, all home-made) and we'll have enough food to feed 20 people, for under $50.

Pretty much.

I do enjoy a smoked turkey gumbo, but the problem is I then have to take the time and use the wood to smoke the damn thing first.

For the first time ever I am gonna have to figure out how to use a shitload of venison I got for free. My neighbor was out of town for a month and got a text that his power went out; told me to help myself to his freezer full of deer meat before it spoiled.

I insisted he take it back after I held it during his electrical repairs but he wouldn’t, said it was a gift to me. Very nice, but WTF do I do with >35 pounds of meat???? I don’t have that many friends lol

Turkey sucks. Even fried turkey is marginal.

Why do we force ourselves to eat something we don't really like once or twice a year because of the date on the calendar?

Rouses must have their own turkey farms.

You just have to buy a ham and get a free turkey up to 12 lbs. Now that ham will get you for 2.99 a pound. But if you find the smallest ham and the biggest turkey, you have a money saving match.

Rouses for the win.

Easy answer…bring it to a processor and have him make you some sausage!

Well, except for any tenderloins that are in there. You’ll want to cook those.

I heard the same thing. AOC and Jasmine Crockett seduced the turkey farmers and distracted them, while Obama’s goons snuck into the coops with a deadly injection made by Dr Jill Biden and killed the flocks.

Now Thanksgiving will have to be canceled under President Trump.
