Brian Kelly's Efforts in Recruiting (story)

It is wild that LSU has even been able to bring in some of the talent they have with Kelly's apathy towards recruiting.
It bodes well for the next guy knowing that any little effort at all should restore to LSU to what it was.
From Bruce Feldman article in The Athletic:

We were paying this guy $10 million per.

If you noticed quotes from the players during their commitments, they would only name position coaches as influential parts of their decision.
I don't think I remember anyone naming Kelly.

The assistants must have absolutely hated Kelly

Im just pissed all this is just now coming out. He really did shite the bed and put fourth minimal effort into this job once he signed that contract.

Say what you will about Orgeron, but that guy was a relentless recruiter back when he cared. I remember there was some recruit out of Houston that O showed up at 6 AM with coffee to see him. Weird, but kind of cool.

He’d stop anything he was doing to talk to a recruit. And if I remember correctly, he had blocked off scheduled times each day to make sure he & the staff called a recruit like every 30 minutes or something lol

I’ve yet to hear a former player come out in support of Brian Kelly, which I think is very telling.
It says a ton about LSU that we were still putting together elite classes in spite of the head coach.

He probably did some good building out the organizational structure, but just so it could operate with as little involvement from him as possible. Maybe the next coach can take full advantage of it.

How does this fit with BK being willing to dance with recruits like an idiot? Seemed then that he was putting effort into recruiting, even if he came off as a loon.

once, in his first month as a coach, trying to patch up his 1st recruiting class. It is kind of crazy what the internet can imprint into our minds.

Keep in mind that the assistants are mostly young guys with families and young kids who end up fricked if their head coach is fired. No $50MM buyout, just immediately looking for another job to continue providing for them.
And this is the effort he puts in. Why anyone is defending him now like we’re being “too mean” “because no one wanted it to work out worse than anyone” is beyond me. He’s one of the biggest pieces of scum I’ve ever seen in my life and he didn’t give a shite about the people he screwed en route to his retirement fund. frick him

I mean it sounds like he delegated a lot to them, which could be a blessing and a curse. It does not justify him yelling at them on the sideline like a crazy person, but if you have success, the assistant looks like gold. If it doesn't, well, Kelly can of course, blame them and yell at them.
But as far as recruiting goes, if your head coach is not bought in, it's never going to be the machine it can be.

What a contrast from Les and even O. They were both great recruiters.

It's pretty much the style of recruiting that Mainieri used.
And a couple other big named current SEC baseball coaches that just can't seem to get over the hump.

It doesn’t go against the article. Those were scheduled visits it seemed Kelly made the time for. Ask him to go above and beyond anything scheduled and he didn’t care.

quote:Yeah, i remember them using the word "deligate" a lot. I now know what they meant. Seems he deligated as much of his power and responsibility as he could to everyone else. He did the bare minimum
