QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. (KTVK/KPHO/Gray News) - An eighth-grade boy from Arizona was removed from his high school’s boys basketball tryouts and told he can only play on the girls team because of a clerical error on his birth certificate.
Sitting at his kitchen island doing homework, Laker Jackson, an eighth-grade student at Eastmark High School, is thinking about his time outside of the classroom.
quote:
But the multi-talented athlete was excluded from high school basketball tryouts last Tuesday because of a clerical error on his original birth certificate. His mother, Becky Jackson, says there was a mix-up at the hospital the day he was born.
“I give them the birth certificate, and they’re like, ‘Did you know this says female?’” Jackson said. “I was like, ‘Oh, man, that’s so funny.’ So, we come home. Everyone’s laughing.”
Over the years, the fact that Laker’s birth certificate mistakenly listed him as female hasn’t caused many issues – until he decided to try out for the boys basketball team.
“They sent the athletic director of Eastmark High to physically remove Laker from the basketball tryouts in front of all of his friends, in front of the coach,” Jackson said.
quote:
Laker said the incident became a topic of conversation among his classmates.
“From my friends, I heard they were talking about it for the entire tryout and even the next day’s tryouts because they were really confused,” he said.
The Queen Creek Unified School District said in a statement it wants to ensure “fairness, integrity, and equal opportunity” when it comes to athletics. Because Laker’s birth certificate lists him as female, he has been told he has to play on either the coed or girls basketball team.
“Our schools rely on a student’s original birth certificate at birth to determine athletic eligibility,” the statement read.
quote:
Laker’s parents got a corrected birth certificate along with a note from a doctor, but the district says that isn’t enough.
“Now, they may consider changing it if we get chromosomal testing. They didn’t say they would. It says they may,” Jackson said.
Chromosome testing comes with a hefty price tag, and the Jacksons say the district is missing the mark altogether. Meanwhile, Laker just wants to play basketball.

That's ridiculous.
Former LSU baseball player Jacob Berry's dad, Perry Berry (a USL alum), is the superintendent of that school district.

I see it both ways here. I think boys should play on boys teams and girls on girls based on what sex you were assigned at birth and not what sex you decided to identify as at a later date.
But if it truly was a clerical error then it’s really tough luck for the kids family to have to pay all that money to do chromosomal testing.

No it doesn't. I did karyotyping in my college genetics lab.
Granted that was like 1,000,000 years ago...

I read this on one of my local news sites.
WHY did the parents let there be an error on their child's birth certificate for so long?
That's on them. Haha, they thought it was funny... really?
What even is this article arguing? Not to adhere to biological sex in the realm of sports? And THIS is their poster child case? Idiot parents? Really??

Honestly, with the state of Dr’s today, I can see why the school would hesitate to accept the word of a Dr.

Liberals have decided the only solution is to cut the boy's dick off.

So it never dawned on them that they might want to get this fixed? that it might be a problem later? Everybody involved in this story are idiots. From the hospital, to the parents, to the school.

Again, another reason we send our kids to Catholic schools…
Another school district trying to flex its muscles….
School boards are filled with too many power happy individuals.

I thought the same thing…
Liberal thinking…. Wouldn’t it be easier just to make him a girl…

This Baw won the equivalent of the 8th grade lotto, getting invited to hangout in the girls locker room.

I'm not sure if it's actually a clerical error, or if something else is going on here and they're literally "hiding the ball" in this story.
That said, my son's birth certificate has an error. It says he was born at 8:00 AM when he was born at 8 PM. We inquired about getting it changed when we received the original but it wasn't a free fix. There were fees associated with getting it changed.
He's 12 hours younger than his birth certificate says...
That said, something like gender, get it fixed.

Let's stop right here. "Assigned?" I think you meant to type "observed."

These people named their kid Laker
They obviously make constant bad decisions

Hilarious. Laker should just become the GOAT “women’s” HS basketball player.
Also, I think Braxtyn (he/him) just found out the greatest lifehack to make it on top tier travel ball teams.
