Keurig Water Reservoir Smells Like Pond Water

Every time I need to open it to add more water I get a whiff that smells different from tap water. I've washed it with bleach and dump it out often but still the smell remains. It doesnt seem to affect me but I am curious as to any health concerns so here I am asking, is this bad?

Buy the cleaner/descaler that's made for it- follow the instructions exactly (my daughter didn't and ruined her machine). Should be good to go.
At my Wmart, the cleaner/descaler is sold right by the keurigs. Easy to find.

Are you adding water from an actual pond?

If its anywhere light gets into the reservoir it will grow algae. 15 years and they still havent come up with a light blocking water holder. I guess they make too much off the cleaners.
I use purified bottled water and it will still grow if i dont keep it shaded under upper cabinets.

I hate coffee makers with reservoirs for this very reason.

That's how you know it's seasoned properly.

Get a French press. Problem solved.

“Try vinegar” response is where I would start. Use white vinegar.
Solids/minerals in your tap water can precipitate out with use and evaporation. These minerals can leave an odor.
Bleach will kill any bacteria/algae like growth. Vinegar will dissolve the minerals back into solution. Flush throughly.
This is a common issue in water heaters/boilers. Hot water can hold more dissolved minerals in solution, but as it cools it will then precipitate out of solution and build up over time. Using a water softener in the incoming water can elevate that.

You're drinking boiled plastic, Keurigs suck regardless. Learn to do a pour over, cheaper and healthier.

Be sure when you wash the reservoir, that you push in on the little check valve at the bottom so it gets clean too. You are making me want to get up and smell mine, now!

I mean it's a Keurig. Can you really tell the difference in the way your coffee tastes?

Let it get almost empty before you refill the tank. Then dump out the remainder and pour fresh water in (out of something filtered.) if you’re just adding fresh water to almost contaminated water it will grow stuff faster. And get it out of the sun.

Run a 1/3 vinegar 2/3 bottled water thru it. Then flush multiple times with bottled water. Once the vinegar smell/taste is gone only use bottled water from then on.

I thought this was common knowledge?
Evidently, it isnt.

That’s exactly why we have one that has a 1 cup reservoir.
