How often do you go to Starbucks?

Starbucks announced a $1 billion restructuring plan Thursday that involves closing some of its North American coffeehouses and laying off more workers as it moves ahead with its "Back to Starbucks" transformation under CEO Brian Niccol.

The number of company-operated stores in North America will decline by about 1% in fiscal year 2025, accounting for both openings and closures, the company said in an SEC filing. Starbucks operated more than 11,400 locations in North America as of June 29, suggesting that more than 100 cafes will shutter their doors as part of the restructuring plan.

Approximately 900 non-retail employees will be laid off on Friday, Starbucks said.

Starbucks estimates that 90% of the expected $1 billion restructuring cost will be attributable to the North America business. In total, the company expects to incur about $150 million in employee separation costs, plus about $850 million in restructuring charges related to the store closures, according to the filing. A significant portion of expenses will be incurred in fiscal year 2025, it said.

Starbucks said in the filing it is prioritizing investment "closer to the coffeehouse and the customer" as it looks to reverse a sales slump in its biggest market. The company's same-store sales have fallen for six straight quarters, hurt by increased competition and price-conscious consumers.

quote:

Starbucks executives had previously said that the company would be slowing new openings in favor of remodeling existing locations this year. The renovated cafes are meant to encourage customers to linger, taking the coffee chain back to its roots as a "third place" for consumers, outside of home and the office.

Maybe they should stop burning their beans and getting involved in politics.

The coffee tastes like arse. You can find them everywhere. I guess at one time that place was a luxury, but not anymore. More of a "McDonalds but green signs" place these days.

I quit going to Starbucks when they stopped allowing vagrants to take up all the seating without buying anything. So much hate.

I stopped going when my local store stopped asking my pronouns. In this house we believe love is love, black lives matter, and anyone who doesn't use correct pronouns is a nazi.

Here is my experience. Somewhere around 10-15 years ago, Starbucks coffee went downhill when they stopped using whole milk in drinks and began tinkering with the coffee so it didn't overpower skim milk. They also introduced the new automatic machines. The resulting coffee didn't have any depth or coffee taste like before, so then they moved towards more added flavoring and seasonal drinks. Their regular espresso based drinks without all the added sweeteners or flavors taste watered down or burnt. If you try ordering one with whole milk like they were made back when the chain took off, you can barely taste the coffee and the drink is pale.

Starbucks can tweak here and there all they want, but the problem is their coffee.

I stopped letting my wife go to Starbucks years ago. One year for her birthday I bought her A BUNCH of high end home coffee stuff. Espresso, Chemex, Nice grinders, we get fresh beans.

And basically said we cannot afford for you to go to star bucks every day for basic arse coffee. She’s an incredible chef and thank Christ I was able to convince her we can actually make better coffee at home with good ingredients and care.

She gets Starbucks like twice a year now. Has saved us a fortune year over year after the initial investment.

If you live near a 7 Brew.....you don't go to Starbucks anymore, unless you like unfriendly baristas that probably want to shoot you in the neck, a slow drive thru, and burnt coffee beans.

Out here it's Dutch Bros. Or Human Bean. Or Moxie Java. Or any of the local spots. All with better coffee and better service.

Starbucks was doomed as soon as people started believing "barista" was an esteemed title and career choice.

You pour fricking coffee in a cup at a place with a drive through.

Their nitro cold brew is the only coffee they sell that I’ll buy. And not the normal cold brew, which is also arse.

As for how often, only if I’m buying it for my staff and I happen to feel lazy.

My answer to this rhymes with “lever”.

I’m not particularly a coffee aficionado to start with but their entire schtick from Day One did not resonate with me.

They have always (too hard) attempted to portray themselves as too cool for school.

So many better options that act like they want my business.

7 Brew is mentioned and it’s awesome.
CC’s if you are in Louisiana is better than Starbucks
Dutch Bros
Pj’s if you are in New Orleans is good
Most indie coffee shops are better

I just don’t associate Starbucks with a good experience anymore. They are slow and unfriendly. The Starbucks stores are much nicer looking with better interior seating than most alternatives, but they can’t process drive thru orders as quickly as 7Brew since they balance “dine in” with drive thru capacity out of some ambition to sell horrific prepackaged food.

A lot of crazy left wing nut jobs have gravitated toward Starbucks as a place of employment. The company is constantly fighting unionization even in places like Baton Rouge.

Starbucks is safe in urban areas without the need for a drive thru (including transit terminals, airports, malls, etc). But needs to offer better food or reformat to be more like their newer competitors in suburban areas.
