I’m sitting in my living room reading a book with my daughter playing on the carpet and my wife sitting next to me. We start hearing sirens go off that get progressively louder. We look out the window and house across the street is engulfed in flames. Young family with little boy who’s maybe 3 years old live there. The three of them are standing in the street without shoes on, watching everything they own go up in flames.

I need to remind myself frequently that life can always be much worse. What a freaking bummer for a Sunday evening.

We brought them a big bag of basic necessities, and they have family that lives in town. What the frick you expect me to do, run in there and put the fire out myself? There’s 3 fire trucks surrounding the property working on putting it out.

Had the same thing happen in May of last year. It was the middle of the night, but it was sad watching our neighbors watch their house and everything they own burn to the ground. Even the car in the driveway was sort of melted into nothing.

I’d think that’s a pretty normal and realistic response to that happening. You can be relieved it isn’t you and also be sad and compassionate for your neighbor. Those aren’t mutually exclusive.

That sucks.

Luckily a brand new house will make them feel much better soon.

They live across the street and you don't know their names?

I've spent 25yrs filling my house with memories.

It's not the house you mourn but all that goes with it- baby pictures, yearbooks, wedding albums, cards and letters from your dead relatives, baby teeth, awards, etc...

No new building would make me feel better about memories lost.

Great reminder. Best to them. They have each other. Was worried this post was not going to end this “well”.

fire is absolutely devastating. Worse thing possible to happen to your home. Its impossible to even comprehend how many things you will lose. Years down the road, you'll think, "oh I could use that dohicky for this it will be perfect". Then you'll realize it was lost in the fire 5 years ago.
