ACCRA, Ghana (AP) — While fantasy coffins have been common among the Ga people of Accra, Ghana, they are becoming a widespread practice offering a colorful alternative to simple wooden boxes.

Each piece is crafted not just to bury the deceased, but to embody the essence of their life. They can be so colorful that they can make dying seem attractive.

Is there some kind of dark humor happening here?

One of my friends worked for a casket dealer and they'd wrap caskets. It was near Jackson so there was always some crazy shite going on them.

There are some parts of Africa that really do seem to just be full of nice and funny people. Maybe it’s how simply they live without all the extra BS we have, but young black men over there are all smiles while here in the US it’s just scowls.

No, just regular humor. Seems like they have a much better philosophy around death than most in the US.

The Ga people of Accra have been making these for decades. The coffin design usually reflects the person’s profession or passion - like a fisherman buried in a fish-shaped coffin, or a driver in a car-shaped one. It’s a mix of art, culture, and honoring the dead.

It seems to depend on the country.

South Africa is worse than America.

Zimbabwe is much safer though.

Probably can’t show the coffins for pimps and prostitutes.

Seems like a better tradition than spending $20k on box that's gonna rot in the ground for eternity.
